GSC General Meeting Minutes: September 7, 2005 President - Robin McGill VP, Administration - Ki-O Kim VP, Social - Sarah Dawson Treasurer - Matthew Hirsch Secretary - Dany Chan Technology Officer - Guillaume Marceau Speaker Sheila Bonde, Dean of the Graduate School, first reported that Brown University is admitting displaced students from New Orleans, and may call upon graduate students for help in these efforts. She then offered her vision for the Grad School: to foster a sense of community and identity for the Grad School, through social and academic events; to identify and clarify a "Graduate Curriculum": what are the commonalities among the individual programs? This question has led to a new seminar series titled, Academy in Context, whose first dinner/seminar, highlighting issues of "ethics in academia," will begin on Wednesday, October 5, 2005. Executive Reports President: provided an overview of the mission of the GSC and a report on the revisions of the Constitution and by-laws last semester. Goals for this semester includes implementing the Constitution and pushing for more advocacy from the GSC. Vice-President, Administration: summarized the responsibilities of this office, which includes communicating with the representatives of the external committees, and organizing the process of group recognitions. Vice-President, Social: the first Social is on Friday, September 16, 2005 at the Graduate Student Lounge, and a DJ will now entertain us at these Socials. In addition, a new calendar is now available for Lounge reservations. Secretary: attendance at the monthly meetings will be emphasized for all representatives, and extra effort will be directed at recruiting vacancies in unrepresented departments. Technology Officer: responsible for updates of the GSC website and one of the goals this semester is to have the Brown Book accessible online. Treasurer: the (3) Summer Socials were a success, as was the New Student Orientation. The following forms are now online: departmental rebate forms and funding request forms. Budget Proposal for 2005-2006 After several motions for amendments, a new budget was passed for this upcoming year. External Committee Reports Brown Bookstore Committee: the committee has been deliberating on ways to improve the campus bookstore. A decision is expected by the end of the semester. Group Recognitions Brown Community Knitter's Group is now recognized as a student group. Barus & Holley Basketballers is now recognized as a student group. Funding Requests Brown Community Knitter's Group Requested $400 towards the "Comfort Items for Sick Children Project." In accordance with the by-laws, $200 was awarded for this project. Vacancies - External Committees Advisory Committee on Corporate Responsibility in Investment Policies Adam Wienert has been elected as the representative for this committee. Parking Violations Appeals Board John Cumbers has been elected as the representative for this committee. Miscellaneous A motion was passed to move the October general meeting to Thursday, October 6, 2005 due to a conflict with the first lecture of the Academy in Context series.
