Community Service

The sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta dedicate time to community service throughout the year. We support the American Cancer Society annually by participating as teams in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk each Fall in Rhode Island, and the Relay for Life on campus each Spring.
Theta also partners with the brothers of Alpha Epsilon pi to assist the Rhode Island Blood Center with their blood drives on campus on an ongoing basis. By helping with publicity and donor sign ups, we assist in making the blood drives at Brown among the most successful in the state.

Every October, Theta teams up with all Greek houses to host Halloween on Wriston. For this program, hundreds of elementary and middle school aged children arrive on Wriston Quad for an afternoon of Halloween celebrations. Many of the children live in neighborhoods where it is unsafe to Trick-or-Treat, so this event gives them the chance to celebrate the holiday. The Theta sisters have organized cookie decorating, facepainting, and other crafts for the groups in our lounge, and they also plan the logistics of the project so the day runs smoothly.
Thetas enjoy volunteering with children in the Providence area, and have planned other projects such as organizing educational activities with kids at McAuley Village in South Providence, and cleaning up the playground at the Fox Point Early Education Center. Many Theta sisters are involved in ongoing service activities, individually or in groups, including nutritional education at a nearby school, providing services to homeless families through Operation Happy Birthday, teaching English as a Second Language to adults in Providence, and offering college prep. help to students at Hope High School.
Theta is always looking for new service opportunities, especially any involving interaction with children or communities in need. If you have any project suggestions or contacts, please do not hesitate to contact our Service Chair, or any Theta sister, with your ideas!
