"Que Bonita Bandera! Roots, Rhythm and Pride," the theme of Puerto Rican Culture Week -- which kicked off last Friday and continues into the rest of this week -- celebrates the Latino cause on the Brown campus and in the community and honors the flags of Hispanic countries around the world.

The week, which is mainly sponsored by the Third World Center (TWC), began with a convocation last Friday featuring speaker Dr. Pablo Rodriguez, a clinical assistant in the obstetrics and gynecological department at the Brown Medical School.

Rodriguez, of Puerto Rican descent, discussed his experiences moving to New York from Puerto Rico to study. He also shared his thoughts on being honored as a community leader for Puerto Ricans.

"The convocation went well," said Puerto Rican Culture Week Programmer Steven Colón '98. "A lot of students showed up, even though the weather was bad."

The cultural celebration continued with several events over the weekend, including a lecture entitled "Puerto Rican Literature, Language and Identity." At this event, one non-Latino student approached Colón.

"She said to me, `I came because I knew nothing about Puerto Ricans, and I wanted to learn something,'" he said. "It's great that there are people that are interested in learning. These events provide them with the opportunity to learn about the Puerto Rican community."

Last night's event, titled "Leadership and Voice," featured Jaime Antonio Estades, a political activist who focuses on voter education and registration. Estades stressed how important voting is to the Latino community, and discussed the status of Puerto Rico in relation to the United States.

On Saturday, the Third World Center will be celebrating Puerto Rican Pride Day with a special Unity Day, co-sponsored by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Atzlán (MEChA). The Unity Day will focus not only on Puerto Rico, but also on other Latino countries.

"We try to get as many groups as possible from the Third World community to be involved in the process so that the week can be successful," Colón said.

Puerto Rican Culture Week has been organized for the past several years. "Every year, there's a different focus for the week,"

Colón said. "It's meant to educate the Brown community at large, as well as provide an outlet for which Puerto Rican students can showcase their culture and history."

This year's theme, "Que Bonita Bandera!" -- which means "What a Pretty Flag!" -- comes from a Puerto Rican song praising the flag. "In a sense it's a Puerto Rico anthem," Colón said of the song.

"One thing that many Puerto Ricans have in common is their pride in their flag," he said. "It's something that connects us."

The week concludes on Sunday with a cultural show presented by MEZCLA entitled, "Las Banderas del Ritmo," which means "The Flags of Rythmn."

Members of the Federación de Estudantes Puertorriqueños (FEP), and co-chairs Aracely Alcea '00 and Katrin Beinroth Micus '00, have helped make the week a success, Colón said.

"The week has been going really well," Colón said. "It's really rewarding in that sense."
