Campus Resources:

- Brown University

Brown University Latino Alumni Council - The mission of the Brown University Latino Alumni Council (BULAC), a chartered organization of the Brown Alumni Association, is to maximize the Brown experience for Latinos, to serve as a representative voice for Latino Alumni and to assist in the unification of alumni efforts to further and support the interests of Brown University. These goals shall be accomplished through networking, advocacy, and engaging (educationally and socially) Latino members of the Brown Community and others.

Colombianos Unidos en Brown - Colombianos Unidos en Brown (CUB) is a student organization for students of Colombian descent and for those who appreciate or want to learn more about Colombian culture. We would like to unite the Colombian community at Brown in order to increase awareness and educate others about Colombian culture and history. In addition, we plan to initiate direct aid to low-income families in Colombia and outreach projects in Rhode Island in order to aid the existing Colombian community. CUB is open to all full-time members of the undergraduate community. Colombianos Unidos en Brown is not exclusive to students of Colombian descent. Any student who desires to learn more about Colombia may join.

La Federación De Estudiantes Puertorriqueños - Founded in the Spring of 1979, La Federación De Estudiantes Puertorriqueños (FEP) is a student organization which was created to address the needs and issues facing both mainland and island-born Puerto Rican students at Brown University . FEP was created by Puerto Rican students dissatisfied with the Latin American Students Organization's (LASO) attempts to meet their needs or address issues affecting Puerto Rican students at Brown. FEP's creation was sparked by the need to provide support for, and increase the retention rate of, Puerto Rican students who attend Brown.

Latin American Student Organization - Brown Latin American Student Organization (LASO) is a student organization open to Latino-identifying undergraduate students and to those who desire to learn more about Latino community and culture. We strive to cultivate a sense of identity, community, and unity through campus outreach, greater community involvement, and numerous other activities. We hope to foster understanding by sharing the culture and experience of people of Latin American descent at Brown and beyond.

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlán - El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlán, also known as M.E.Ch.A., is an advocacy and support group for all Chicana/o students at Brown. MEChA explores both the political and cultural paradigms that define and influence Chicanos across the nation and at Brown. M.E.Ch.A. leads discussions that revolve around various issues that affect Chicanos nationally as well as at Brown. Our efforts transcend discussion, but also seek to function as a political, social, cultural and educational group. Our affiliations are not only regional, but we also belong to the nation wide networks of M.E.Ch.A.

Mezcla - We the members of MEZCLA, the Latino performing arts troupe at Brown University , work closely as a united group for the purpose of achieving three main goals: 1.) Through our dance, theater, music, art, and poetry we strive to convey and teach the beauty, diversity, and richness of the Latino culture to the Brown community at large; 2.) Through our cultural differences we hope to learn from each other and create a fun and supportive social environment where the interchange of ideas may take place freely; 3.) Through our efforts we hope to organize social and cultural events that offer Brown students a venue for the expression of their talents. MEZCLA simplifies these three goals into our three principles: teaching, learning, and performing. Every semester MEZCLA organizes & performs a cultural show, that, in the past, has attracted hundreds of students and faculty. The event showcases everything from salsa and merengue to samba, banda, and hip hop. MEZCLA strives to display the many Latino cultures in the show for the education of the Brown community.

The Third World Center - The Third World Center at Brown University , created in 1976, was designed to serve the interests and meet the needs of all Third World students and to promote racial and ethnic pluralism in the Brown community. Originally housed in the basement of Churchill House, in 1986 the Third World Center was relocated to Partridge Hall on 68 Brown Street , directly across the street from Faunce Arch and the Main Green.The Third World Center is directed by Dean Karen McLaurin-Chesson, Associate Dean of the College.

SOMOS - SOMOS is the Latino Literary Magazine of Brown University. We encourage all aspiring artists and writers to contribute their poetry, essays, documents, and all types of artwork such as sketching, photography etc. An issue of SOMOS will be distributed every semester with collaborated pieces of Brown students, faculty, staff and alumni, and the Latino community in the Providence community.

 

- Johnson & Wales University

The Multicultural Center - The Multicultural Center (MCC) was founded in 1993 to encourage effort to respect, support and educate people of diverse characteristics and backgrounds. The MCC hosts and co-hosts a wide variety of educational programs, cultural events and social activities that are designed to engage students, staff and faculty in direct interaction around issues of diversity and community.

Office of Student Activities - JWU’s Office of Student Activities (OSA) offers programs designed to meet the wide range of students’ co-curricular interests. OSA is also available to assist with the formation of new student groups, advising of existing groups, monetary support for all student organizations, leadership training and development, and event planning.

 

- Providence College

Organization of Latin American Students - The Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) is a club that is open to all members of the Providence College student body regardless of their ethnicity or major. The club's mission is to promote the various Latino cultures found in the world today to the greater Providence College community. OLAS commits itself to expose the student body to cultural aspects that characterize Latinos and their way of life, as well as bringing knowledge and awareness of issues that Latinos all over the world are facing. This awareness and knowledge of the Latino culture is brought about through group discussions, lectures, movies, music and literature, outside resources, food, and personal experiences.

Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs - The Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs (BCMA) provides workshops, guest speakers and educational activities for members of the Providence College community to explore and engage in multicultural learning experiences. In addition, we provide academic, social, cultural, and personal programs and services that support, retain, and graduate AHANA (African-, Hispanic-, Asian- and Native American) and Multicultural Scholarship Program (MSP) students.

Society Organized Against Racism - The Society Organized Against Racism promotes a general awareness of cultural, racial, and ethnic differences as well as similarities. SOAR creates campus projects that educate students of the evils of racism. They also plan activities, advise the institution, and serves as advocate for changes which promote racial understanding.

 

- Rhode Island College

Student Support Services - The Student Support Services (SSS) program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students towards the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and facilitate the process of transition from one level of higher education to the next.

Preparatory Enrollment Program - The Preparatory Enrollment Program has a long history of encouraging and supporting students from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds in their pursuit of a Rhode Island College education. The purpose of P.E.P. is to assist young people who are educationally under prepared and who come from academically and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to override these barriers.

The Unity Center - The Unity Center is Rhode Island College's multicultural center. It promotes opportunities for exploring human dignity, social identity, and cultural equity. The Center fosters collaborative programming among its student affiliations, faculty and the local community. It is committed to challenging stereotypes, racism and apathy and gender discrimination. The Center's concern is to maintain global awareness by responding to current events while preparing others to be productive citizens of the world. The Center is also a place where students can engage their peers and faculty about what is being taught in the classroom and is a space for dialogue and discussion. The Center strives to preserve, bolster, and enrich students' cultural, social and ethnic identity.

Student Activities - The Office of Student Activities organizes trips and programs, assists with event planning, supports student organizations and advisors, and offers leadership development opportunities.

 

- Bryant University

The Intercultural Center - The Intercultural Center (ICC) is the Center for education on international and multiethnic issues at Bryant University. The Center is the place for discourse, resource development and consultation on diversity. It also serves as a resource base for international and multicultural students on campus.

International Student Organization - The International Student Organization (ISO) of Bryant University believes first and foremost that ISO should be a means to provide opportunities for students from all countries of the world to interact; to promote cultural awareness and a cooperative spirit within local and world communities; and assist members in their awareness and usage of university resources.

The Multicultural Student Union - The Multicultural Student Union (MSU) of Bryant University believes in the support of community kinship, fellowship, and acts as the bond that holds together the multicultural community at Bryant. Specific social programming, promotion of educational experiences aimed at servicing the multicultural student body, support of Bryant University’s efforts in diversity and the educating of the Bryant community, is, and will continue to be, the focus of our conscience and existence.

La Unidad Latina Foundation - The La Unidad Latina Foundation was established in 1999 to serve as an independent, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to educational achievement and civic empowerment in the Latino community.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund - The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. Founded in 1975 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, HSF's vision is to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans.

Latino College Dollars - This website is an initiative of the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI), a nonprofit organization that advances informed policy on key issues affecting Latino communities through objective and timely research contributing to the betterment of the nation.

Latino Dollars for Scholars Foundation of Rhode Island - Latino Dollars for Scholars Foundation of Rhode Island (LADO) is a private non-profit organization founded in 1993. Our mission is to expand higher education for Latino students living in Rhode Island by involving and assisting the private sector in the support of these students. LADO also provides encouragement for higher levels of achievement among Latino students. Our goals are to increase Latino representation at the post secondary level and to provide the community with academic and professional role models.

The Hispanic College Fund - The Hispanic College Fund is the product of a dedicated group of Hispanic businessmen and women who were inspired to respond to the alarming growth in the number of talented Hispanic students who could not afford a college education. This call to action was precipitated by a compelling letter to the editor published in November 1990, in Hispanic Business magazine in which a student described his disillusionment in seeking financial aid from chief executive officers profiled in the magazine. Several concerned Hispanic CEOs who read the same letter responded by offering to help support the creation of the Hispanic College Fund.

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation - The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) identifies, inspires, promotes and prepares Latino role models through national leadership, cultural, educational and workforce programs.

National Association of Black Journalists Scholarship - Annually, NABJ awards more than $60,000 in scholarships to deserving students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. Scholarships are worth up to $25,000. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born student, currently attending or entering an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.

State Farm Insurance Hispanic Scholarship Fund - State Farm Companies Foundation has assisted Hispanic college students through its relationship with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund since 1990. Each year, they provide $2,500 scholarships to 20 Hispanic college students who are pursing a teaching career.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund - Thurgood Marshall College Fund is the only national organization to provide merit scholarships, programmatic and capacity building support to 47 public HBCUs. Since its inception, TMCF has provided more than $68 million in scholarships and programmatic support to students attending our 47 member public HBCUs and 6 Historically Black Law Schools.TMCF member universities are a critical source of higher education for African Americans. More than eighty percent of all students enrolled in historically black colleges and universities attend TMCF member schools. Many public HBCU graduates have become leaders in the business, government and entertainment industries. However, few of these achievements would be possible without the support of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Ninety percent of all students attending public HBCUs require some form of financial assistance.

In response to the growing demand from business for talented, qualified, diverse employees, INROADS was established to identify interested and capable high school, college, and university students who would pursue business, accounting, actuarial science, engineering, computer and information sciences, sales, marketing, allied health, healthcare management, and retail store management careers.

Habitat For Humanity - Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Hispanic Federation - Established in 1990, the Hispanic Federation is a service-oriented membership organization that works with over 90 Latino health and human services agencies to promote the social, political and economic well-being of the Latino community.

Rhode Island Community Food Bank - The Rhode Island Community Food Bank provides quality food to people facing hunger through our network of certified member agencies. We also provide leadership and information to promote citizen action, advance government nutrition assistance, and promote private efforts aimed at developing effective solutions toward the elimination of hunger in Rhode Island.

Center for Hispanic Policy and Advocacy - CHisPA's vision is to help create a social, political and economic environment where the needs and aspirations of Latinos are embraced in a manner that is consistence with that experienced by the Rhode Island's population in general.  We ambition a community where the Latino perspective is a respected addition to the policy making arena, where language is not a barrier to achieving economic success or political equity and where access to housing, health care and education is considered a right extended to all citizens regardless of their race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, political status, or socio economic status.  As a viable bicultural organization, CHisPA will be a strong voice of the latino community and will sucessfully engaged other community resources and individuals to support its efforts to realize this vision.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute - The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) is one of the leading Hispanic non-profit and non-partisan 501(c) (3) organizations in the country. CHCI was established in 1978 by Congressman Edward Roybal, Congressman E. “Kika” de la Garza and Congressman Baltasar Corrada to help increase opportunities for Hispanics to participate in and contribute to the American policy making process.

League of United Latin American Citizens - LULAC is the largest and oldest Hispanic Organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide. The organization involves and serves all Hispanic nationality groups.

National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials - The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) is a 501(c)(4) nonpartisan membership organization whose constituency includes the nation’s more than 6,000 elected and appointed Latino officials.

Rhode Island Latino Political Action Committee - The Rhode Island Latino Political Action Committee is a nonpartisan organization formed to influence the political process in the state of Rhode Island in order to improve the quality of life of Latino and urban communities.

National Pan-Hellenic Council - The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities. The nine NPHC organizations are sometimes collectively referred to as the "Divine Nine." The member/partner organizations have not formally adopted nor recommended the use of this term to describe their collaborative grouping. The NPHC was formed as a permanent organization on May 10, 1930 on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, D.C. NPHC was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois in 1937.
