How do I know if the media and history are fair and balanced?

In this four-week course, we focused on learning about the concepts of media and power, stereotypes, bias, context, and our connections to the news. Over the entire course, students participated in a group project in which they researched how a current issue (HIV/AIDS, affirmative action, hip hop, Patriot Act, North Korea ) is portrayed in the media. Each student produced a paper describing how the media presents his or her topic and participated in a news broadcast about the topic. Students learned how people use media sources to influence the public and how the public can have power to influence the media. Students learned the concepts of detecting stereotypes and bias within the media and discussed the relationship between a source's context and its bias. This course focused on the importance of being aware of the news, while at the same time being critical of where the information comes from.
