Paralegal Studies Central High School

Paralegal Studies focused on teaching students an introduction to the American legal system through both case studies and comprehensive units. During the four months teaching the course to 11th and 12th graders, we discussed six different units of study: case study on the 1964 murder of Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner, Philosophies of Law from Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, Federal and State Jurisdiction and Court Authority Order, the Bill of Rights, case study on Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board, and writing a Professional, Academic Essay. By working with a cooperating teacher who was also a practicing lawyer, I was able to teach students many aspects of government that they would need to understand in order to learn more about the legal system. We also used many current events such as Hurricane Katrina and the Supreme Court nominations to relate the present to the topics we learned about.
