How can I teach my students to be better writers and speakers?

As part of Brown's Undergraduate Teacher Education Program, every student must complete a personal inquiry project during their student teaching semester. The project involves researching an aspect of teaching that the student teacher wants to focus on during the semester. For my project, I chose to answer the question: how can I teach my students to be better writers and speakers? I spent time teaching my students a unit about writing academic essays and learning different discussion techniques that would help students learn more about the content of the class. The Personal Inquiry Project ended in a thirty minute presentation I gave to other student teachers and cooperating teachers explaining my progress through the inquiry. The link below is a hand-out that I created to supplement my presentation and contains many understandings I learned through completing this project.
