The power of being an educator is the opportunity to create ‘oh' moments for young people, the times when a person makes a tiny discovery about himself or his abilities that awakens his realization of the possibilities in store for him. The craft of teaching concerns developing the ability to create those moments, to guide students in forming their own talents and achieving mastery of key life skills. To build my craft, the following are the values I associate with good teachers:

A teacher must be knowledgeable of the skills required by the content which he or she teaches, and possess the talent to both help students develop those skills and inspire their interest in the learning process.

A teacher must be an expert learner, setting a positive example to students by his or her dedication to learning.

A teacher must be a community member, aware of the environment in which the students mature and resourceful in using the community as a part of maintaining a student-centered classroom.

A teacher must believe in the equalizing nature of quality education and must teach his or her students that quality education helps create successful adults.

A teacher must be a writing, reading, and mathematics educator, integrating these core skills into the curriculum in his or her content area.

A teacher must be passionate about the profession and developing his or her personal craft.

A teacher must be a listener as well as a speaker, aware of the learning connections that take place from teacher to student, student to student, and student to teacher.

A teacher must be a creator of change, using the classroom as a positive learning environment in which students seek to understand the world around them and its many complications.
