Overview:

Standard One demands that I demonstrate respect for my relationship with students, my expectations of students, and my relationship with the school community. To meet standard one, I must create a classroom environment that is a safe, open environment for discussion and maintain a student-centered atmosphere. I had to communicate great expectations for my students, encouraging them to improve essential skills and challenging them to achieve a higher level of development and learning. I should maintain a friendly relationship with the school community and be an active participant in school activities.

Developing meaningful roles and relationships in the classroom environment is a very difficult, time consuming task. In order to create a good balance in my classroom, I learned that trust is an extremely important factor, especially when there are race and class differences between students and teachers. It takes time for students to develop a trusting relationship with their teacher. A teacher must remain dedicated to gaining the students' trust throughout the entire course.
