Overview:This standard concentrates on how I incorporate the students into the classroom environment. In meeting this standard, I made myself aware of the different learning styles of each student, and spent time evaluating how each of them understands the material addressed in the classroom. I valued the many different individuals that comprise the class, taking time to learn about each student's history and personal knowledge he or she brings to the classroom environment. By valuing my students as human beings filled with rich experiences, this standard ensures that my classroom will be an exciting place for students to learn. Throughout my student teaching semester at Central High School, I tried many strategies to connect with my students and demonstrate that I appreciated the unique qualities they bring to the classroom. I began the first day of class by finding out information about their backgrounds through a letter, and encouraged students to continually share personal experiences when they related to the lessons I taught. I aimed to plan units and lessons that reached students in different ways, whether through art, writing, discussion, or presentations. I also made sure the lessons had a personal connection to students' lives and that they included development of skills that will be essential to them when they graduate high school. Another example of fulfilling the Student as Learner standard during Brown Summer High School was my Literacy Case Study. I collaborated with one of my upper level students throughout the four weeks helping him develop his reading and writing skills. He was a very excellent reader and had the potential to be an excellent writer as well. His strong point was in his discussion skills in class. Most of this resulted from his involvement with the debate team at his high school. I helped him set goals for the course during my initial interview and worked with him on these goals throughout the four weeks. Evidence: |
