Overview:

Meeting standard seven demonstrates that I am passionate about my discipline and that I use teaching as an opportunity to continue my own learning. By engaging in history and being an active learner, I make myself a better teacher and example for my students. Many times throughout my student teaching semester, I brought some of the outside learning experiences I participated in to my students. For example, on World AIDS Day I brought pictures from the orphanage I volunteered for in South Africa and used the pictures to discuss the issues associated with the AIDS epidemic. Students could see that I was excited by being able to share that experience and that I was willing to learn more about my discipline. I also used my involvement in research for the Africana Studies department for several of the lessons I planned this year. By learning how to be a historian through participating in research, I am better equipped to teach my students skills that historians use. I am very excited to become a history teacher and to use my passion for history as an example for my students.
