Evidence: Opening Letter to Students

Description of Artifact:
This artifact is the letter I wrote to my students for the first day of our class. In the letter, I explain to students who I am and why I am teaching this class. I ask students to respond to my letter answering specific questions about their families and interests.

Standard demonstrated by this artifact:
Roles and Relationships

Reflection:
I learned this letter writing technique from a professional development seminar I attended at Central the week before school began. This was an excellent way for the class to start off on a personal note. The students were able to learn why I am excited about teaching the class, what to expect from the class, and what I expect from them. When the students responded to this letter, I was able to learn about their backgrounds and interests, and use those interests to create my curriculum. Learning about the students' families was particularly helpful to understand who needed more support at school and what kind of language difficulties students might experience with writing and reading.
