Evidence: Class Grievances and Compact

Description of Artifact:
During the third week of my student teaching semester, I began to notice that the classroom environment was not exactly how I wanted it to be in creating an encouraging place for learning. The day after a lesson on the Declaration of Independance, I created a declaration of my own grievances with the class. Each student had to respond to every grievance listed, either defending the class against the grievance or citing ways that the class would improve the environment. From there, we had a whole class discussion addressing each grievance and making a compromise about it. The compromise is documented in our compact and the whole class voted to ratify that compact.

Standard demonstrated by this artifact:
Roles and Relationships

Reflection:
Declaring my grievances with the class was a creative and effective way to change the classroom environment. It allowed me to address specific issues I wanted to improve and to give students a sense of ownership over those issues. The compact resulted in many positive changes in the classroom, specifically in creating the make-up work filing cabinet and the homework board. I was not aware that students were having trouble remembering the homework and their suggestion of writing it on the board was a very good solution to the problem. This technique also gave students practical experience in making a contract. Later, when we discussed what a social contract was, I could use this experience as an example that the students were familiar with.
