Evidence: Literacy Case Study

Description of Artifact:

This is the Case Study I completed with 'Elliot' for Literacy Across the Curriculum. I met with Elliot several times during Brown Summer High School, interviewing him twice and completing a running record of his reading. The case study includes the transcripts for the interviews, a journal I kept about his literacy skills, his running record and retelling, an initial survey he filled out, an analysis of his literacy skills, a summary of my recommendations to him, and a letter I wrote to him about how he could improve his literacy skills.

Standards demonstrated by this artifact:

Student as Learner

Reflection:

The Case Study was a great opportunity to closely analyze a high level learner to understand what he does to be a high achiever and how to keep him motivated while allowing other students time to understand the material better. I learned so much from working with Elliot, especially with reflecting on his disparity between being a brilliant articulator while having trouble expressing himself in writing. Since I got to know Elliot very well through the interviews and meetings, I was able to write recommendations for him to improve his literacy very easily. The most important lesson I learned from this case study was to take time to become familiar with each students' goals involving reading and writing and learn how to incorporate those goals into lessons.
