Evidence: Graphic Organizer for Translating Legal Text

Description of Artifact:
This graphic organizer demonstrates one of the methods I used to help students translate legal text from Supreme Court Majority Opinions. As I planned this literacy strategy, I thought about how I interpret difficult text and tried to re-create it in a graphic organizer.

Reflection:
This technique of interpretation worked well for some students, while others found it difficult. For students who did well on the assignment, they noted that the directions on the top of the organizer helped them form a strategy for understanding difficult phrases. As a part of planning for this process, I made sure to write explicit instructions and to model the translation well for the class. The first two translations are written out for the class, and we completed the third and the fourth together as a class.
