Evidence: KWR ChartDescription of the artifact:The KWR chart stands for Know, Want to Know, Reaction. It is a reading strategy I used to help students remember more from the materials they read. Students have to write down one fact they know from each paragraph, one question they have for each paragraph (what they want to know), and their reaction to the paragraph. I usually modelled the first paragraph on each reading for the students, as you can see in this chart. The artifact has a background summary of Plessy v. Ferguson, questions, and the KWR chart. Standards demonstrated by this artifact:Classroom Practice Reflections on artifact:KWR charts are a good tool for helping students summarize what they read and make connections to the text. After using this chart a few times, student became used to the reading strategy and were able to remember the main points from what they read. It could also be used as a study guide when they went back to study for their tests. A few students noted on the final evaluation that this activity helped them improve their reading abilities the most.
