Description of the artifact:

This is a lesson plan, my notes, and student work from July 27 th . I planned the connection web activity that was scheduled for 10:35-11:05 on the 27 th . The students who had already completed their drafts for their final paper went with me into another room in which we discussed their personal connections to news events. The notes detail the questions I asked the students and the student work are the journal entries they wrote about their own connection to a news event in history.

Reflections on artifact:

This lesson was one of my most scripted and most successful dtps. By allowing students to close their eyes and think before they started writing, all the students were able to produce a very detailed journal entry. The discussion that followed the journal entry demonstrated that the students connected with the lesson and they felt comfortable sharing personal stories. Several of the students discussed their reactions to 9-11 and a few even shared personal stories and moments of dealing with racism. I started the discussion by sharing my own personal example of how I connected with the news when I remembered how I felt after Magic Johnson announced he had HIV. By setting an example of telling a personal story, students felt more comfortable with expressing themselves in a safe environment. Students were also able to list the main points of the exercise at the end of it because they had thought about the lesson on a personal level.
