Evidence: Rhode Island Department of Education Brochure

Description of Artifact:
As part of my observations, I attended a Portfolio class taught by Becky Coustan and Susan Dillon. During the class, Julia Steiny, a columnist and copy writer for the Rhode Island Department of Education, spoke to the students, teachers, and administrators about the new graduation requirements for Rhode Island. The talk discussed why Rhode Island is moving to performance based standards and more community involvement in the schools. Steiny hand out this brochure to give students a summary of the requirements.

Standard demonstrated by this artifact:
Professional Knowledge and Growth

Reflection:
Steiny's discussion helped inform me about the state department of education and their goals for high school. Before listening to Steiny, I had not been aware of the state department and they had no influence over my teaching. During her discussion, I began to discover that many of the goals Rhode Island has for their students coincide with many of the skills I wanted to teach in my class. Observing this class taught me about the importance of keeping myself informed of movements in education and aiming to use those movements in my classroom practices.
