Evidence: Slavery Justice Committee WorkshopDescription of Artifact:This artifact is a flier from a two day workshop I attended with one of my students at Brown University sponsored by the Slavery Justice Committee. The workshop, entitled, "Legacies of Slavery in American Life: Politics, Education, and the Arts," brought many speakers together to discuss how the legacy of slavery influences American life today. Through attending the workshop, I learned about many ways to teach students about the legacy of slavery and to develop a classroom environment that allows for such conversations to take place. Standards demonstrated by this artifact:Engagement with Subject Matter Reflection:This was one of the most exciting moments for me as a teacher to attend the workshop with one of my students. By learning about this topic along with one of my students, I was able to both set an example for him and participate in cooperative learning. Throughout the rest of the semester, we discussed the workshop with the other students in the classroom and used many different techniques to bring what we learned at the conference to the rest of the class. I plan to use many of the people I met at the workshop as resources when I begin teaching again and to use the materials I learned to develop my classroom curriculum.
