About Us
The Brown Muslim Students' Association (BMSA) is an independent student organization at Brown University founded in 1990 to meet the social, spiritual, cultural, and intellectual needs of Muslim students on the Brown and RISD campuses. The BMSA seeks to provide a warm, welcoming, and accessible community open to all who identify as or with Muslims and the Muslim community regardless of personal belief or degree of practice. All are welcome to BMSA events and activities held on campus.
Purpose
The Brown Muslim Students' Association seeks to build an open community for Muslim students at Brown where they may worship, practice, question and learn about their faith through open dialogue and discussions with fellow students and faculty members. Our aim is to help build understanding and an appreciation for differences through halaqas, open-lectures and inter-faith discussions. The BMSA also seeks to fulfill the religious needs of students and faculty on campus regardless of their specific sectarian background. We are proud to offer weekly Friday Jummah prayers, iftar dinners and taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, and much more.
About Our Logo
The BMSA Logo, designed by Vivette El Fawal '09 and the BMSA Executive Board 2008-2009, is a depiction of both Islamic and Brown University art. The university's name is spelled out with parts of Arabic letters made to appear as English letters, and a mosque in the East with Brown's distinctive sun rising to make it shine even more.
