Multiple facilities and
services are available at Brown which students may utilize for Muslim life
on campus. From locations to pray to a Zabiha/Halaal dining option, a
Muslim student or faculty member can practice their faith freely. The
following resources should be useful whether you are a newly admitted
student learning about what options you have, a prospective student, or if
you are just in the Providence area. |

Prayer Halls
- The Brown Muslim Students' Center (BMSC)

A large and comfortable room with prayer rugs, collections of
Quran/Hadith, and a place for wuduh/ablution.

Open 24/7 with Card Access (Make Request to the BMSA Vice
President)

Weekly services provided for Jummah at 1:15 during the school
year.

Located in the basement of Morris and Champlin Hall on Pembroke
Campus. Building entrance is through either Meeting Street or Cushing
Street. AMap is seen at right.

- Multi-faith Prayer Room
- A small room where one can peacefully offer prayers if near the
main campus. Open use for all.
- Located next to the Chaplain's
Office (Room 228) on the 2nd Floor of Faunce Hall of the Main
Green. Location will be changing to J.W. Wilson Lab in Fall 2008 as
Faunce Hall undergoes renovation.

Pastoral Care

The Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life (OCRL)
The Office of the Chaplains is available for personal
consultation, pastoral care, and spiritual and religious assistance.
The OCRL is also a good source to help get in touch with other
religious services and interfaith and multifaith activities. The
University Chaplain, Janet Cooper Nelson, and other spiritual leaders
are available at (401)-863-2344. The University is currently looking
to a hire a new Muslim Chaplain. See the OCRL

Dining Options

On Campus Meal Options (Kosher/Halal, Vegetarian, Vegan,
Flex etc.)Whether you are a vegetarian or only eat Zabiha/Halal meats,
Brown University Dining Services (BUDS) offers various flexible plans
to fulfill your needs. There is an exclusively vegetarian line in the
main dining hall (The Sharpe Refectory) which anybody can go to, and a
special Kosher/Halal/Zabiha option where food is specially prepared
and kept in a separate room for Jewish and Muslim students. Please note that Kosher/Halal food is ONLY available in the Sharpe Refectory and not in any other dining hall. More
information about the meal plans can be found on the BUDS
website.
During the month of Ramadan, the BMSA and
OCRL help provide daily iftars and dinners in the evening at the Brown
Muslim Students' Center. An option is also available to donate unusedmeal
credits to help pay for the iftars.

Off Campus Meal Options
For off campus, students may opt for the "Off Campus Meal
Plan" in which selected restaurants participate. On Thayer Street
near campus there are various restaurants including a Starbucks, two
Pizzerias, a Greek Restaurant, two Middle Eastern restaurants
(which serve Vegetarian) and
an Indian restaurant
(Kabob and Curry) which serves a few Halal/Zabiha dishes.
Also in
the area are Taste of India (Wickenden St.), Not Just Snacks (South
Asian cuisine - Hope St.)
Crown Fried Chicken (Broad St.), and
Kennedy Fried Chicken (Olneyville Square) for Zabiha/Halal

Housing Information
- For Undergraduate Students
-
Brown University has a variety of housing options for students.
Most dormitories at Brown are co-ed, with freshmen housed together in the same unit. Some, but not all dorms are designated freshmen only.
-
Additionally, students may choose any one of
several "Special
Interest Housing" options including Same-Sex housing (which many
incoming female Muslim students choose), Substance-Free, Quiet Hall,
Housing for Transgender Students. Accomodations can also be made for students with disablities. Freshmen receive a form during the summer
to choose special interest housing. More information can be found at

Brown University also offers various "Program
Houses" dedicated to various themes and is one of the few
universities to have an Interfaith house which is very popular.
"Interfaith House fosters creative discussion and inter-religious
dialogue for both the religious /spiritual and the
nonreligious/spiritual, and everyone in-between." More information can

- For Graduate and Off Campus Students
Most graduate students live off campus, but there is accommodation
for 55 students on campus in Miller Hall on Pembroke campus. Students
seeking housing off campus should visit the Auxiliary
Housing website. Additionally, the Brown
Daily Jolt, ForRent.com,
and GoOffCampus.com may be useful resources. If you email the BMSA, someone may also be
able to put you in touch with current graduate students.
- For Visitors
If you are visiting Brown you may stay at the Brown Inn, or
one of several hotels in the area. Prospective students may also stay
with a current undergraduate and may specifically request a Muslim
host if they so choose. Please consult with the admissions
office for more information.
