BROWN MUSLIM STUDENTS ASSOCIATION

Welcome, Class of 2013!

Dr. Sherman Abd al-Hakim Jackson Speaks at Brown on 12/2
11/21/2009---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Professor Sherman "Abd al-Hakim" Jackson will be joining us on Wednesday, December 2nd. Dr. Jackson was recently named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world, both for his highly acclaimed academic work on Islamic theology and law, and also for his activism within the American Muslim community. You can read more about Dr. Jackson here: Dr. Abd al-Hakim

Here is the schedule of events related to his visit. These events are open to everyone.

    Monday, November 23rd, 7pm, Salomon 203
Prof. Corey Walker (Africana Studies) and Associate University Chaplain R. David Coolidge will be doing a discussion about selections from William R. Jones' book Is God A White Racist?. Dr. Jackson's most recently published book Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering (Oxford University Press: 2009) directly addresses Jones' work, and so we felt it would be helpful for people to get a chance to read a little bit of Jones and discuss some of the issues raised. If you haven't already gotten the reading, you can email Dave at Robert_Coolidge@brown.edu, or you can pick up a hard copy in the Chaplains Office (4th floor, JWW). Copies of Dr. Jackson's two most recent books will be for sale at the discussion as well.

    Wednesday, December 2nd, 4:30pm, Salomon 001
Dr. Jackson will deliver a lecture entitled Muslims, Islam(s), Race and Racial Agnosia in America. There will be ample time for Q&A. Copies of Dr. Jackson's two most recent books will be available for purchase at the event as well.

Wednesday, December 2nd, 6:30pm, Brown Muslim Students Center
We will gather in the BMSC after the lecture for an informal dinner and discussion with Dr. Jackson.

We look forward to seeing you at some or all of these events!

09/21/2009----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The course is open to all students, although familiarity with the Islamic tradition and Arabic is highly encouraged. Light reading required. The course will be taught by R. David Coolidge, Associate University Chaplain, and will first meet in J. Walter Wilson 501 from 7-8:30pm on Wednesday, September 23rd.

Eid Mubarak 2009!
12/19/2009----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The moon has been sighted in North America tonight, which means that Eid is officially here! We'll be gathering in the parking lot outside of the BMSC tomorrow - Sunday morning at 8AM. Please bring a car if you have access to one, as there will be many people to transport! We'll be praying outside, so bring something warm to wear and blankets and prayer rugs. After the prayer, everyone is invited to the Chaplain's house on 131 Brown Street (on the corner of Brown and Bowen Streets) for brunch.

    Thanks!...

Thank you from the BMSA to each and everyone of our sponsors, organizers, volunteers, and helpers during the Ramadan. With your help members of the greater Muslim community at Brown were able to observe the month of Ramadan and break fasts in a warm, and welcoming community. This was especially important for new students, many of whom fasted away from their family and home for the first time and were able to find a home away from home among their friends in the BMSA. Pictures from Ramadan are available in the gallery section.
