  • Sweatshop talk was a big success -- thanks to everyone who helped publicize it and who attended. There's a meeting this Thursday at 9:30 in the Urban Environmental Lab, on Angell Street. A message from Katie:

thank you so much for coming on monday night. i was so excited to see so many engaged people there.

our hope is that the event will give us some momentum to get together, organize, and get involved. there is so much we can do to work towards this cause.

we will be having a meeting this THURSDAY, OCT. 21st, at 9:30pm at the Urban Environmental Lab, on Angell Street.

the goal of this meeting will be to briefly share our reactions to the presentation, and to talk about what angle(s) we want to use to approach this issue.
    some things to think about:
do we want to focus on the consumer end of the problem?
do we want to focus on walmart?
    providing direct help to workers?
educating others about sweatshop and child labor, to build a movement?
    writing/supporting legislation?
exploring socially conscious companies/products, etc and educating about that?

    THERE ARE SO MANY OPTIONS.
as charlie said, we have an incredible amount of power as students, to be the voice for workers like Robina and Maksuda.

  • Apple-picking pictures are now online. Thanks to everyone who came out to help out a local farmer in a fun afternoon.
  • We had a brief presentation about the Coca-Cola company. Brown is a big consumer of Coca-Cola products, and we heard some pretty dismal things about Coca-Cola's record of social responsibility. Look for more information soon.
  • Heather gave us a nice information sheet from Global Exchange on Fair Trade.
  • Parents weekend is Saturday. Oxfam will be giving out free fair trade coffee and selling gift certificates to the Hourglass cafe on the Main Green. It should be pretty awesome.
  • Hunger Banquet is (almost definitely) November 14. It may possibly be the 15th, and that will be decided soon. Hope is looking into food and logistics.
  • Fair trade candygram chocolates next week. Buy a treat for a friend Monday-Wednesday.
