The Brown University Yacht Club, founded in 1896, is one of the oldest established organizations at the University and was one of the first college sailing programs in the country. It is also one of the most active, sailing seven days a week during season (September through November and March through May). The goal of the Yacht Club is to provide the entire Brown community with the opportunity to sail, from novice sailors to serious racers. Last year there were about 50 active members (50% male to female ratio).

Within the club there are two main branches to accommodate a variety of members:

Recreational: Welcome every afternoon the team practices, weather dependent.

Sailing Team: A "Club Varsity" sport at Brown. We receive support from both the Athletic Department and the Student Union. The Brown University Sailing Association is our alumni group that helps with fundraising and development.
Team members practice at least three days each week. We meet on campus:

Tuesday and Thursday: Wayland Arch, 2:30pm
Wednesday and Friday: Wayland Arch, 3:00pm
These practices include a wide variety of boathandling drills, practice starts, team races, and fleet races.

Location: We sail out of Edgewood Yacht Club, one of the finest locations for wind and waves in Narragansett Bay. The club is approximately 4 miles from campus.

Boats: The fleet is comprised of 18 420s, 6 FJs, 4 Lasers, 1 Vanguard 15 and is supported by two motorboats. The 420s and FJs were purchased in September of 2005.

Regattas: Brown enters as many events as any team in the country (4-8 each weekend). Most are one or two day fleet racing events in double handed dinghies, while there are also team racing events, single-handed, sloops, and big boats. There are Varsity and Invitational events, open to all, as well as Women's regattas, and Freshmen regattas.

We are not a "sailing factory" where you have to have won hundreds of trophies in order to be considered for a weekend regatta. There is room for everyone on these teams and you will get a chance to do a lot of racing if you so desire. Brown was a charter member of the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association in 1936. We participate in the New England section, known for its high concentration of very talented sailing teams. Most events are within an hour's drive and include many nationally ranked teams.

Brown was also a charter member of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Sailing association in 1961, and has always been a formidable presence on the women's circuit -- winning national titles in 1985, '88, '89, '98 and being runner up in '86, '87, '90, '91, and '97.

Brown Sailing has been awarded with 88 College Sailing Hall of Fame inductees and All-Americans over the years. The team has been ranked as high as #1 in the national rankings in both women's and coed over recent years and most recently won the New England Dinghy Championship in 2005 and 2006.

Meetings: Every Wednesday night the team holds a meeting at which we review previous weeks results, assign teams for upcoming regattas, discuss tactics and rules, plan social activities, etc.

Coach: Coach: John Mollicone, Boston University '98, is in his ninth year as head coach. John was an All-American at BU in 1998, leading his team to the New England Dinghy Championship and finishing 3rd at the Collegiate National Dinghy Championship. Since coming to Brown, John has coached 26 All-Americans, 34 All-New England Sailors and has led the Bears to 18 National Championship appearances and six New England Championships. John Currently lives in Newport, RI where he actively races everything from dinghies to keelboats.

Applicants to Brown who are interested in racing are encouraged to contact John Mollicone (401) 413-1439.
