Brown Wins Atlantic Coast Championship Two Years in a Row

The Brown Sailing Team just finished up the 2005 Fall season as the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Champions for the second year in a row! With the victory, the team climbed up to #2 in the college sailing rankings for the fall season. It was a great way to end the long season after so many near regatta victories throughout the fall. The Bears didn't let this one slip away with a very exciting battle all the way until the final race with Georgetown University. The top seven New England teams, top eight Mid-Atlantic teams, and top three South Atlantic schools qualified for the fall championship, which was sailed at the St. Mary's College of Maryland, November 12-13.

The Atlantic Coast Championship is considered the largest event of the fall season, and the Bears were determined to keep the trophy after winning it last year at M.I.T. and finishing the 2004 fall season ranked #1 in college sailing. After the first day Georgetown University had a slight lead over Brown, and as the event progressed the two teams really pulled away from the rest of the 18-team field. With only a few races remaining, Brown had a more than 20-point lead and then disaster struck with a premature start resulting in a last place finish in B-division, and another last place finish in the very last A-division race. With only one race left, race 15 B-division, Georgetown and Brown were tied for first with 201 points each. It was all up to our B-division duo of Richard Hale '06 (Annapolis, MD) and Monica Stein '07 (Redwood City, CA) to go out and beat Georgetown for the title. You could say they were a bit nervous. Third place in the event was far enough back in the standings that Brown just had to start ahead and cover Georgetown all the way. A great start by Brown forced Georgetown to tack away to the unfavored right side of the racecourse. Brown covered and finished the race in 5th, while Georgetown was forced to take chances to break away and fell to last place in the race. It was one of the most exciting races I have ever had the pleasure of watching, although I may have a few more gray hairs now. Brown went on to finish 3rd overall in B-division while the team of Charles Enright '07 (Bristol, RI) and Arlene Chung '06 (Murrysville, PA) won a very difficult A-division stacked with most of the top college sailors. Charlie is a two-time Honorable Mention All-American Skipper, while Arlene was an All-American Crew last season. Alternate sailors Matthew Amarante '08 (Wayne, NJ) and Meris Tombari '08 (Fishers Island, NY) should also be noted for their dedication and support at this event and throughout the fall season at varsity events.

The Women's Atlantic Coast Championship took place last weekend as well, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. The Brown Women were in fourth place after the first day, but a tough second day dropped the Bears to ninth in the 18-team event. An impressive performance was put forth by the B-division team of Merebea Danforth '06 (Providence, RI) and Jennifer Bauer '06 (Lockport, NY), who finished fourth place overall. The women ended the fall ranked #11 in the final fall rankings. Top ranked Yale won the event.

Brown Coed and Women's Teams Qualify for ACC's

The 2005 collegiate sailing season is well underway and both the coed and women's teams have successfully qualified for the fall dinghy championsips. The coed team, led by the A-division duo of Charles Enright '07 (Bristol, RI) and Arlene Chung '06 (Murrysville, PA), and B-division team of Richard Hale '06 (Annapolis, MD) and Monica Stein '07 (San Francisco, CA), finished an impressive fourth place overall at the Danmark Trophy, October 1-2, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The team was in the lead most of the event, just holding off #1 ranked Boston College and #2 Hawaii. In the final races the conditions got tricky and Brown had a few tough races dropping to fourth but only a few points out of second. The top three New England Schools qualified for the Atlantic Coast Champs, the fall championship for college sailing, to be sailed November 12-13 at the St. Mary's College of MD. The Bears grabbed the third spot and will try to defend their title after winning it last year at M.I.T. The coed team has fluctuated between 8th and 15th in the college sailing rankings so far and hope to get back to the top by the end of the fall season.

The Brown Women's Team, in a bit of a rebuilding stage after graduating three top sailors from last year, got over the hump last weekend by finishing third out of 22 teams at the very tough Yale Women's Intersectional. The women's team has been steadily improving each week and had a tremendous day on Sunday at Yale to grab one of the two New England berths for the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship. The Championship will be held November 12-13 at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Last year the Bears finished 3rd and in 2003 they won the ACC's. Led by A-division sailors Katherine Lovelace '07.5 (Greenwich, CT) and crew Christina Starr '06 (St. John's, Antigua), the women have climbed the ranks to #7 in the latest Sailing World Rankings. Merebea Danforth '06 (Providence, RI) and Maria Harris '06 (Cambridge, MA) sailed B-division for the Bears and finished fourth, while Brown's A-division finished third and won the last three races.

Brown Honored With 6 All-Americans for 2004-2005 Season
The 2004-2005 season was one of most successful in Brown Sailing history with both the coed and women's teams being ranked as high as #1 in North American in the college rankings and both squads combining for almost a dozen regatta victories. The coed team won both the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship and the New England Dinghy Championship while the women were top three in almost every single event throughout the fall and spring. At the National Championships in June in Austin, TX the Bears were honored for their efforts with six All-Americans, the second most of any team. Brown has now had 20 All-Americans over the past five years. Congratulations to the following six sailors who had tremendous 2004-2005 seasons and to Patrick, Anne, and Louise on their future endeavors. We certainly miss them.

Patrick Rynne '05 (Scituate, MA) Coed All-American Skipper
Anne Davidson '05 (Madison, CT) Women's All-American Skipper
