Official Brown Temporary Worker Employment Policy

 

Note: "Miscellaneous payroll" are temporary workers that are hired by Brown directly.

EMPLOYMENT ON THE MISCELLANEOUS PAYROLL AND THROUGH TEMPORARY AGENCIES

Brown University requires the services of various types of employees to fulfill needs of a seasonal, short-duration or part-time nature. Such positions may be full or part-time. In general, these positions do not qualify as regular positions.  Seasonal, short-duration employees may be hired on the miscellaneous payroll or secured through the services of a temporary agency.

General Guidelines for Work on the Miscellaneous Payroll

Seasonal, short-duration and part-time employees working on the miscellaneous payroll should not work more than 975 hours in the most recent calendar year in any combination of positions at Brown. Employees working less than 18.5 hours per week (or employed through a temporary agency) may work at the University for an indefinite period.

Temporary Employment-Over 975 Hours

Seasonal, short-duration and part-time employees working on the miscellaneous payroll, who have worked in excess of 975 hours (in any combination of jobs) in the most recent calendar year, should be terminated from the miscellaneous payroll. Under exceptional circumstances and with the approval of Human Resources and the EEO/AA Office such employees may be placed on the regular payroll for a period not to exceed six months.

Compensation and Benefits for Seasonal, Short-Duration Employees Working on the Miscellaneous Payroll

  Seasonal, short-duration and part-time employees are paid an hourly rate and only compensated for hours worked. Such employees working in nonexempt positions are paid time and one-half if they work more than 40 hours per week and are not eligible for benefits, holiday, sick or vacation pay, or pay for inclement weather days.

  Federal and state income and Social Security taxes (and any other deductions as may be required by law) are deducted from the employee's miscellaneous payroll check in addition to contributions for Rhode Island Temporary Disability Insurance (RITDI) Seasonal, short-duration and part-time employees working on the miscellaneous payroll are covered under the University's Workers' Compensation Program and may be eligible to receive disability payments under RITDI.  

ID Cards for Seasonal, Short-Duration and Part-Time Employees

  Certain positions require that seasonal, short-duration and part-time employees working on the miscellaneous payroll have access to campus facilities which are restricted to those carrying a Brown Identification Card. ID cards with limited privileges may be issued if requested in a memorandum to the Supervisor of Records and Processing from the employee's department head. The employee's supervisor is responsible for returning the card to the Supervisor of Records and Processing when the term of employment ends.
