The Brown Student Labor Alliance (SLA) advocates for the rights of workers at Brown, in Providence, and around the world. Through the use of grassroots solidarity, direct action, and coalition building the SLA works to defend workers' rights to adequate wages, benefits, working conditions, and representation. Our current focus is advocating for a living wage for all Brown employees. Although Brown claims to uphold institutional values and responsibility, these values do not seem to extend to many Brown employees. In particular, temporary workers often work long hours at minimum wage without benefits. Even many permanent workers and workers in the union do not always earn adequate wages. To read more about a living wage for Brown workers and our campaign, check out the living wage section above. Get more info. on the living wage campaign in Providence at http://www.truthpower.org/livingwage.htm. Over the past few years, the SLA has carried out a successful anti-sweatshop-labor campaign to ensure that Brown University apparel is produced in fair conditions. The campaign resulted in Brown University's participation in the WRC (Worker's Rights Consortium), a non-profit that verifies factory conditions that was created by students at Brown and across the country. Check out the details of the campaign under the 'anti-sweat' section. Brown is also a member of the corporate-controlled FLA (Fair Labor Association), a membership of which the SLA does not support. Read about reasons not to support the FLA here. Wanna get involved?!? Come to one of our meetings! The Student Labor Alliance meets every Tuesday night at 9:00 in Wilson 301. Everyone is welcome...no experience necessary. Hope to see you there. |
