The Brown University Swing Club offers weekly lessons for anyone interested. Lessons are held on Thursday nights in either Sayles or the Crystal Room next to Alumnae Hall. Check above to find out where practice will be each week. Practice is are always free and open to anyone who would like to learn. We offer two tracks: beginner from 9-10 pm and intermediate from 8-9 pm. From 10-11 pm we offer Free Dance, an hour for people to practice their moves, ask questions, and have fun!
The Brown Swing Club's beginner lesson track is geared towards introducing swing to those who have had little or no swing/general dance experience. No partner or coordination is necessary, just a willingness to be a little outgoing, try something new, learn a couple of moves, and have fun.
For Semester I, this track is designed specifically for those who have previously taken classes with the Brown Swing Club, as well as those who have swing experience elsewhere. This semester, we will be starting the intermediate track by learning a choreographed piece.
Beginners (with permission) are welcome to try this track out, however it is highly recommended that you concurrently take the 9-10 pm beginner track, so as not to miss out on any experience that could be gained from learning Charleston and Balboa. The choreography integrates several swing styles, so it may be difficult to keep up.
Every Monday night, we host an informal practice session. This is a chance for a little extra practice, to ask questions, or to catch up if you've missed a lesson. Swing Club board members and other experience dancers are there to help and to dance. These practices are held in Alumnae Ballroom (in Alumni Hall above the Gate) from 7-9 pm.
