UCS is responsible for appointing student representatives to over twenty university committees on campus. These committees range from setting the university budget to weighing in on alcohol and drug use on campus. Traditionally UCS has a large appointments process every spring, and a smaller round of appointments in the fall.

 

Brown and the Economy

The Organizational Review Committee (ORC):

UCS will be appointing students to serve on subcommittees that report to the Organizational Review Committee (ORC). The ORC is tasked with considering how Brown can more efficiently provide administrative support for research and teaching while working to reduce Brown's deficit. The organizational review subcommittees will look at specific areas such as information technology, or events management. Student representatives will serve on all committees that relate to student life and services. All students are eligible to apply for these subcommittees.

Advisory Committee on Corporate Responsibility (ACCRIP) (chair: Louis Putterman)
The Advisory Committee on Corporate Responsibility in Investment Policies (ACCRIP) considers issues of moral responsibility in the investment policies of Brown University. It examines all proxy resolutions concerning issues of social responsibility that are presented to the University as a shareholder, and has developed guidelines for voting on such resolutions.

Bookstore Advisory Committee (chair: Manuel “Manny” Cunard, Bookstore Manager)
The Bookstore Advisory Committee has an advisory role to the Bookstore Director and shall be charged with a set of responsibilities specific to the general operations and programs associated with the Brown Bookstore.

Brown University Community Council (BUCC) (chair: Ruth Simmons, University President)
The Brown University Community Council serves as a university-wide representative forum for discussion, debate, and advisory recommendations on a wide spectrum of issues and concerns. It may, at its discretion, consider and advance questions of University community policy, the governing of the University, and issues related to the overall welfare of the University; and to make recommendations regarding any such matters to the appropriate decision-making bodies of the University or to the appropriate officers of the University.

Campus Life Advisory Board (chair: Margaret Klawunn, Dean)
The Campus Life Advisory Board shall serve to advise the Vice President for Campus Life & Student Services, and other senior officers as appropriate, on resources, planning and priorities with regard to campus life and student services.

Subcommittee on Alcohol and other Drugs (chair: Nancy Barnett)
The Subcommittee on Alcohol and Other Drugs is concerned with the use and misuse of alcohol and drugs on campus by students and their guests, as well the relationship between substance abuse and their academic lives. It provides advice to the Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services and addresses issues related to alcohol and drug use and misuse by students.

Subcommittee on Athletics and Physical Education (chair: Michael Goldberger, Director of Athletics)
The Sub-Committee on Athletics and Physical Education is concerned with the athletic needs and interests of all students, faculty and staff who participate in programs of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education, and with the relationship between the athletic and academic needs of all students. It provides advice to the Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services and the Director of Athletics regarding all appropriate aspects of programs and activities managed by the Department of Athletics and Physical Education.

Campus Planning Advisory Board (heads: Temporarily Vacant)
The Campus Planning Advisory Board serves to advise the senior officers, on resources and priorities concerning the utilization and development of the physical campus.

College Curriculum Council (CCC) (chair: Katherine Bergeron, Dean of the College)
The College Curriculum Council is a body of faculty, students, and administrators charged with regularly reviewing and vetting undergraduate curricular offerings at Brown to ensure quality and consistency.

Community Carbon Use Reduction At Brown (CCURB) Steering Committee (chair: Kurt Teichert)
To meet its community objectives Brown has launched the Community Carbon Use Reduction at Brown (CCURB) project which will help catalyze local carbon emissions reductions through an investment of financial resources and development of collaborations of community and civic groups with Brown students, faculty and staff on a diversity of activities.  Projects that accomplish the dual goals of helping meet the needs of the greater Providence neighborhoods while reducing greenhouse gas emissions will be the focus of these off-campus projects. Members of the steering committee will review project proposals and help distribute CCURB funding.

Subcommittee of the Computing Advisory Board, the Academic Technology Steering Committee advises the university on technology that affects and influences academics at Brown. This includes myCourses, Banner, and more.

Diversity Advisory Board (DAB) (chair: vacant)
The Diversity Advisory Board is a broadly representative group that meets to consider matters that concern the campus community especially with regard to diversity. Its mission concerns the well being of the community — the capacity for collegiality and the pursuit of the common good while preserving an excellent education for all students.

Energy and Environmental Advisory Committee (EEAC) (chair: Christopher Powell, Energy manager)
Facilities’ Energy and Environment team formed the Energy and Environmental Advisory Committee during the fall of 2006 whose purpose is to enable a forum for representatives of the student body, faculty and staff to provide guidance and input to the Facilities Management department’s development of a Strategic Energy and Environmental Plan. The plan will provide recommendations for annual energy conservation, cost control and greenhouse gas reduction targets and actions.

Friedman-Rock Advisory Council (chair: Sarah Bordac)
The Friedman-Rock Advisory Council (FRAC) is a group of students that advises the Library on student needs in the Friedman Study Center and Rockefeller Library. Particular emphasis on the services, spaces, and collections which undergraduate students need. If you frequent the Rock, Friedman Center, SciLi, Orwig or the Hay and have ideas for making them better then please apply!

Honorary Degrees (chairs: Jack Wands, Leonard Moorehead)
The Honorary Degrees Committee seeks nominations for Honorary Degrees from the Faculty and students, prepares a list of candidates for Honorary Degrees during early Fall Semester each year, and submit it to the Board of Fellows for consideration the later part of the same semester. It consults with the Board of Fellows on the criteria for selection as well as on the merits of all candidates for Honorary Degrees.

Library Advisory Board (chair: Harriette Hemmasi, Head Librarian)
The Library Advisory Board serves to advise the University Librarian, and other senior officers as appropriate, on resources and priorities with regard to the University Library System. The Library Advisory Board reviews and makes recommendations about the University’s policies concerning the Library and its operations; helps monitor the effectiveness of library services; and comments on planning and implementation of plans for current and proposed Library policies and programs.

Officer Conduct Review Board (OCRB) (chair: Russell Carey)
The OCRB is established to serve as a body for the review of Department of Public Safety's investigation and disposition of complaints filed by students, faculty, staff and members of the public. In addition, the OCRB shall conduct a review of incidents or allegations involving the use of force that results in serious bodily injury and incidents when an officer has discharged a firearm.

Parking Violations Appeals Board
An individual who has received notice of a parking violation by ticket or other form may appeal the fine to the Parking Appeals Board within seven (7) days of issuance of the violation. The Parking Appeals Board will render a decision within fifteen (15) business days after the appeal has been received.

Peer Community Standards Board (chair: Dean Castillo)
The Associate Vice President of Campus Life/Dean for Student Life may refer offenses that do not involve possible separation from the University or a transcript notation to the Peer Community Standards Board. The Board hears cases involving undergraduate respondents. The Board reviews the evidence, hears testimony, and receives information and determines whether the respondent(s) has violated the Standards of Student Conduct, and, as necessary, determines a sanction.

The Public Safety Oversight Committee (PSOC) was established to serve in an advisory capacity to the Vice President for Administration and the Chief of Police for the purpose of reviewing the practices, policies and procedures of the Department of Public Safety, and making policy recommendations where appropriate.

Residential Council (chair: James Reed)
The Residential Council (or ResCouncil) evaluates housing-related University policy, acts as an advocate for the program and Greek houses
on campus, and, with the Office of Residential Life, facilitates the promotional and logistical processes of the Housing Lottery.

Tougaloo-Brown Partnership Campus Advisory Committee
The Campus Advisory Committee is the principle management entity on the Brown University campus. This committee is composed of faculty, administrators, and students, and the purpose is to oversee and implement programs and initiatives, while maintaining fluid and active communications with interested parties.

University Disciplinary Council (chair: Joseph Pucci)
The Associate Vice President of Campus Life/Dean for Student Life may refer offenses that involve possible separation from the University or a transcript notation to the University Disciplinary Council for a hearing. The Council will review the evidence, hear testimony, and receive information. The Council further determines whether the respondent(s) is responsible for violations of the Standards of Student Conduct, and, as appropriate, assigns a sanction.

The University Resources Committee (URC) is responsible for recommending the annual operating and capital budget to the President.

Creative Arts Council (CAC) (chair: Richard Fishman, Director) - not appointed by UCS
The Brown University Creative Arts Council supports the goals of the individual creative art departments and programs as well as facilitating a common vision for the arts that transcends discipline and creates unity, serving as a catalyst for innovative collaboration across disciplines and providing a regular forum for communication among all members of the arts community.
