November 4, 2009

UCS unanimously passed a resolution asking for an increase in the student activities fee to support student groups. If adopted by the University, this will result in a $46,000 increase to activities funding. This resolution will be submitted to the University Resources Committee, and will be taken under consideration as they set the University's budget for next year. We will report back after the budget is set.

The Social Justice Network was approved for category II status.


October 28, 2009

Tonight, UCS introduced a resolution urging the University to increase funding for student activities. By encouraging the University to modestly increase the allocation that the student activities fund receives, we hope to counter increasing media services, facilities, and DPS costs and continue to provide support for all student groups. You can read the resolution here. It will be discussed and voted on next Wednesday.

At tonight's meeting the Yoga and Mindfullness club was approved for category III status, while the Capoeira Club was approved for category II status. And a special congratulations to Nourish International, the first ever category S group!

October 14, 2009

Beppie Huidekoper, Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, spoke with undergraduate students at tonight's meeting. She provided an extensive look at Brown's financial situation including financial plans, their implications, and Fiscal Year 2011's current budgeting process. She also spoke about the Organizational Review Committee's task in overseeing a campus-wide effort designed to ensure optimal organization of administrative operations and help reduce the university’s $30 million budget deficit. UCS approved a code change to create a new group category 'S', which will support student groups whose primary purpose is raising money to send to off-campus service organizations - click here for more information on category S. UCS also approved Brown Taiko for category III status.

October 7, 2009

UCS approved its Annual Agenda -- an outline of its goals for the coming year. It will be boxslipped shortly, but in the mean time, you can read it here.

After a two week process, UCS appointed ten students to seven committees for Fall Appointments. You can read more about the recent appointees in the October 7 minutes, or check out the appointments page to learn more about the university committees on which undergraduates serve.

UCS also approved two new groups for category I status. Brown University Movement Experience (BUME) and Students for Educations Reform were both constituted and categorized. Congratulations!

Dean of the College, Katherine Bergeron, and Vice-President of Campus Life, Margaret Klawunn met with UCS to discuss Advising Central, changes to the tutoring program, the Organizational Review Committee (ORC), and changes to hours at Health Services.

In addition, UCS approved the literary publication The Round for category III status.
