Contents
1) Summary of Corporation at UCS Meeting
2) UCS Meeting with President Simmons Report
3) Recent UCS Resolutions - Banner Prerequisites
4) UCS Updates
5) Open University Committee Position - Parking Violation Appeals Board

=================================================

1) Summary of Corporation Members at UCS Meeting
Two members of the Brown Corporation, Elizabeth Chace '59 and Joan Sorensen '72, attended the last UCS meeting of the semester. They were joined by Secretary of the University, Al Dalhberg and Vice President for Campus Life, Margaret Klawunn. The majority of the hour was spent discussing the governance structure of the Corporation with a particular emphasis on creating or instituting "Young Alumni" positions on the Corporation. UCS members and members of the community expressed strong opinions that the Corporation should include younger voices. Creating an endowment to replace the Student Activities Fee, and construction priorities given the economic downturn were also discussed. Corporation members affirmed President Simmon's commitment to meeting the financial needs of all students despite the current economy. Thank you to everybody who attended.
--------------------------------------------

2) UCS Meeting with President Simmons
The UCS general body met with President Simmons in late November. President Simmons provided her perspective on the economic downturn and heard reports from the five committee chairs regarding UCS goals and projects. Preserving the undergraduate experience and how Brown's growth is affecting undergrads was extensively discussed. Other topics included the technological enforcement of prerequisites on Banner, Brown's national rankings, and endowing the student activities fund.

---------------------------------------------

3) Recent UCS Resolutions - Banner Prerequisites
In our last meeting of November, UCS passed a resolution against the technological enforcement of prerequisites on Banner. The Graduate Student Council recently passed a similar resolution. UCS's resolution was presented at a recent faculty meeting, and members of USC and the GSC will be meeting with the Faculty Executive Committee. UCS fully expects to receive a formal response by January 31, 2008 and we will update the student body at the beginning of the Spring semester.

---------------------------------------------

4) UCS Updates - A snap shot of current and upcoming projects
--Starting next semester meal credit and flex points will be available on Banner
--Mail services will start sending e-mail notifications when students have received certain types of packages.
--UCS and the Office for Campus Life will be providing shuttles to TF Green airport at the end of finals period. Be on the look out for a complete (and accurate) schedule next week.
UCS General Body meetings will reconvene next semester. Some things to look forward to:
--The UCS Mid-Year report - over the winter break the Communications committee will be compiling a comprehensive update on UCS projects
--UCS at the Spring Activities Fair - learn more about UCS and consider joining for the Spring semester. Students can join UCS at any time!
--UCS sponsored study-breaks around campus to ensure that students have the opportunity to give feedback.

---------------------------------------------

5) Open University Committee Position - Parking Violation Appeals Board
The Parking Violation Appeals Board's mission is to review appeals of parking citations, evaluate special circumstances not foreseen by current parking policy, and when necessary mitigate the effect of the application of the policy if it has unfair or unanticipated consequences. The Board will meet every other week for approximately an hour to consider appeals and will provide a written explanation to the appellant of the Board's decision to grant or deny the appeal. While the Board does not make policy, the Board may suggest to the Transportation Office changes in or clarification of parking policy that the Board thinks might be helpful in the administration of Brown's parking resources. Nominees must be able to commit to the bi-weekly meeting schedule with a high degree of certainty, as timeliness of Board rulings is important. Terms are for one year.
If you wish to be a member of the board, please email ucsappointments@gmail.com by Sunday, December 7 at 11:59 pm with a 250-500 word essay explaining both why you want to serve on the board as well as how you will be a good voice for the undergraduate student population.

Good luck with finals! Have a wonderful and safe winter break!

4) Young Alums on the Corporation
5) UCS Town Hall Meetings -- First Town Hall -- Nov 11, 8pm @ MoChamp Lounge
6) University Appointment -- Campus Life Advisory Board's Subcommittee on Athletics and Physical Education
7) UCS Updates

=================================================

1) UCS / BCA Poll on myCourses! Win concert tickets to Spring Weekend!
The Fall poll is an excellent opportunity for UCS to find out what is important to the student body. Your participation will help us prioritize our goals for the rest of the year, and demonstrate need and demand for key issues to the administration. Do you think pre-requisites on Banner are bad? Would you like to see subsidized advertising space in the BDH for student activities? How would you change the meal plan? Tell us, so we can tell the appropriate people. The poll also includes questions from the Brown Concert Agency -- BCA would like to know what bands they should bring for Spring Weekend, and what genre of music you would like to prefer. If you want to have a part in picking the line-up for Spring Weekend then take the poll. Everybody who takes the poll will be entered in a drawing for Spring Weekend tickets. What are you waiting for? http://mycourses.brown.edu

--------------------------------------------

2) UCS Annual Agenda Released -- in print and online
Every year UCS releases an 'Annual Agenda' outlining our major goals and projects for the year. Now that we've set our agenda, individual members of UCS are actively pursuing these projects. You can view the Annual Agenda online or pick-up a copy during UCS office hours. If you have any suggestions -- either ideas for our current agenda, or things we missed -- please e-mail us at UCS@brown.edu.

---------------------------------------------

3) Recent UCS Resolutions -- Real Food, Student Activities Fee and Banner Pre-Reqs
In the past month, UCS has passed two resolutions (with another one on the way). Earlier UCS passed a resolution in coordination with The Real Food Challenge at Brown. This resolution urges Brown Dining Services to serve food that is part of a more sustainable and just system. UCS also passed a resolution urging the University Resources Committee to increase the Student Activities fee by 8 dollars. This marginal increase is intended to keep the SA Fee consistent with inflation and provide continued support to all student groups on campus. Currently, UCS is working on a resolution condemning the enforcement of prerequisites on Banner. Watch for UCS reps on the green and in the dining halls in the next few weeks -- we'll be collecting signatures of support for this resolution. All of our resolutions are available on our website.

---------------------------------------------

4) Young Alums on the Corporation
UCS met briefly with members of the Corporation during their fall meeting in October. Discussion topics included endowing the Student Activities Fee in the long term, and the creation of 'Young Alumni' positions on the Corporation. While this issue was not formally discussed during the meetings, individual members were very receptive to the proposal, and we expect the Corporation to make a decision next Spring. You can view a copy of the Young Alumni proposal on our website. UCS believes that the creation of Young Alumni positions is the most prudent and practical means for bringing more student voice to the Corporation.

---------------------------------------------

5) UCS Town Hall Meetings -- First Town Hall -- Nov 11, 8pm @ MoChamp Lounge
It's mid-way through the semester, and we'd like to get to know you! UCS will be holding 'Town Hall' meetings across campus as a means for you to get to know your UCS reps and for us to find out what you want. The first town hall meeting is Tuesday, November 11 at 8pm in MoChamp Lounge.

---------------------------------------------

6) Join the Campus Life Advisory Board's Subcommittee on Athletics and Physical Education
Any Brown University undergraduate student wishing to participate on the Campus Life Advisory Board's Subcommittee on Athletics and Physical Education, which is concerned with the athletic needs and interests of all students, faculty and staff, should indicate their interest by emailing Phileda Tennant at emma_tennant@brown.edu.

---------------------------------------------

7) UCS Updates - A snap shot of current and upcoming projects
--Working on making meal plan balances (meal credit and flex points) available via Banner
--Exploring the fees charged for study abroad
--Ensuring a smooth transition between cable TV and IPTV
--Replacing current Brown e-mail with a system that provides more reliability and better storage
