While there are no additional deadlines specified by these graduate programs, the applications are due to the grants offices (OSP/BMRA) no later than 5 days prior to the grant submission dates. We strongly recommend giving at least 5 additional days notice to the administrator coordinating the submission. Late submissions to OSP/BMRA require the approval of both the VP for Research and the Dean of BioMed to be processed.

Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program
This program sends young Biomedical Engineers, anywhere outside the U.S. or Canada for one or more of the following activities: Conducting academic or scientific research in a university or pursuing coursework at an academic institution. Deadline: Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Medical Research Fellows Program
The Medical Research Fellows Program gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a year of basic, translational, or applied biomedical research. Deadline: January 11, 2014.

American Otological Society - Research Grants
The purpose of the grants is to encourage and support academic research in sciences related to the investigation of otosclerosis or Meniere's disease. Deadline: Jan. 31, 2014.


North Pacific Research Board - Graduate Student Research Awards 
The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) funds marine research to improve understanding of the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands, and Chukchi/Beaufort Seas. NPRB-funded reasearch informs effective management and sustainable use of vital marine resources.  Qualified masters and doctoral students may apply for one of six awards of $25,000 each.

National Science Foundation - Geography and Spatial Sciences Program - Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Awards (GSS-DDRI) 
The Geography and Spatial Sciences Program sponsors research on the geographic distributions and interactions of human, physical, and biotic systems on Earth.

National Science Foundation - Research on the Science and Technology Enterprise: Statistics and Surveys - R&D, U.S. S&T Competitiveness, STEM Education, S&T Workforce 
The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) of the National Science Foundation (NSF) is one of the thirteen principal federal statistical agencies within the United States.  It is responsible for the collection, acquisition, analysis, reporting and dissemination of objective, statistical data related to the science and engineering enterprise in the United States and other nations that is relevant and useful to practitioners, researchers, policymakers and the public.

International Tropical Timber Organization - ITTO Fellowship Programme
ITTO offers fellowships through the Freezailah Fellowship Fund to promote human resource development and to strengthen professional expertise in member countries in tropical forestry and related disciplines. The goal is to promote the sustainable management of tropical forests, the efficient use and processing of tropical timber, and better economic information about the international trade in tropical timber.

Organization for Tropical Studies - Research Fellowships (Graduate Students)
Awards are intended to assist thesis-related field research in tropical biology and similar fields.  Research fellowships are available in amounts up to a maximum of $4,050 (through 2014) or $4,200 (research dates in 2015). This amount is intended to cover up to 50 days at OTS field stations plus $500 in airfare or other permissible expenses.

Tillman Scholar 
Founded in 2008, the Tillman Scholars program supports our nation’s active-duty service members, veterans and military spouses by investing in their higher education. The application to become a 2015 Tillman Scholar will open on February 3, 2015 and close March 3, 2015 at 11:59pm PT.

Tel Aviv University - Dan David Prize -- Call for Scholarship Applications 
The Dan David Prize laureates annually donate twenty scholarships of US$15,000 each to outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral students of exceptional promise in the chosen fields for the current year.  Ten scholarships are awarded to doctoral and post-doctoral students at universities throughout the world and ten scholarships at Tel Aviv University.

National Science Foundation - Biological Anthropology -- SBE Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants  
The Biological Anthropology Program supports multifaceted research which advances scientific knowledge of human biology and ecology, including understanding of our evolutionary history and mechanisms which have shaped human and nonhuman primate biological diversity shaped human and nonhuman primate biological diversity.

Sigma Xi - Grants-in-Aid  
The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences for more than 80 years. By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning.  The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research.

Acoustical Society of America - Raymond H. Stetson Scholarship in Phonetics and Speech Science  
The scholarship is for graduate study and research in scientific areas related to the field of phonetics and speech production. The purpose of this scholarship is to facilitate the research efforts of promising graduate students.

International Foundation for Ethical Research - IFER GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR ALTERNATIVES TO THE USE OF ANIMALS IN SCIENCE  The purpose of IFER’s Fellowship Program is to provide financial incentives to graduate students in science that encourage them at the earliest stages of their career to integrate innovation and discovery with ethics and respect for animals.  Deadline for Pre-proposals: March 30, 2015

Department of Justice - NIJ FY 15 Graduate Research Fellowship in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics  
NIJ is seeking proposals for innovative doctoral dissertation research in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics that is relevant to providing solutions to better ensure public safety, prevent and control crime, and ensure the fair and impartial administration of criminal justice in the United States. The NIJ Graduate Research Fellowship in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics provides awards to accredited academic institutions to support such graduate research leading to doctoral degrees.  Deadline: March 30, 2015

Hispanic Scholarship Fund - Scholarships for College / Graduate Students  
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund accepts applications for the College Scholarship Program. The College Scholarship Program is available on a competitive basis to community college, four-year college, and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Award amounts generally range from $500 to $5,000.

National Institutes of Health - Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (Parent F31) 
The purpose of the Kirschstein-NRSA predoctoral fellowship (F31) award is to enable promising predoctoral students to obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting dissertation research in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The proposed mentored research training must reflect the applicant’s dissertation research project and is expected to clearly enhance the individual’s potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist.

Department of Energy - DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program 
The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories.

Smithsonian Institution - Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute -- STRI Short-Term Fellowship Program  
The STRI Short-Term Fellowship Program allows selected candidates to come to STRI year-round and is an excellent resource to provide support for graduate students and introduce them to tropical research.  These fellowships enable selected candidates to work in the tropics and explore research possibilities at STRI.  
Deadlines: April 15, July 15 and October 15, annually  

Alternatives Research & Development Foundation - Alternatives Research Grant Program (Non-Animal Methods in Biomedical Research) -- Request for Proposals  The Alternatives Research & Development Foundation, a U.S. leader in the funding and promotion of alternatives to the use of laboratory animals in research, testing, and education, is currently soliciting research proposals for its 2015 Alternatives Research Grant Program.  
Deadline: Applications must be electronically submitted or postmarked by Thursday, April 30, 2015

National Institutes of Health - Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD or Other Dual-Doctoral Degree Fellowship (Parent F30) -- AIDS  
The purpose of the Kirschstein-NRSA, dual-doctoral degree, predoctoral fellowship (F30) is to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students, who are matriculated in a combined MD/PhD or other dual-doctoral degree training program (e.g. DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, DVM/PhD), and who intend careers as physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists.

National Science Foundation - Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (DDIG) 
The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research to improve the overall quality of research.

American Society for Microbiology - Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship   
The goal of the Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship is to increase the number of underrepresented groups completing doctoral degrees in the microbiological sciences. The Robert D. Watkins Graduate Research Fellowship is aimed at highly competitive graduate students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program and who have completed their graduate course work in the microbiological sciences. The Watkins fellowship encourages students to continue and complete their research project in the microbiological sciences.
