The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the form used to determine a student's eligibility for:

  • Federal Pell Grant,
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG),
  • The National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant, and
  • Most State Grants

You should request that information from your FAFSA be sent to Brown, by listing Brown's Federal Code (003401) on your FAFSA.

The Federal Pell Grant, ACG, SMART Grant, and most state grants are considered entitlement grants that are based on financial need rather than merit. Therefore, they do not reduce the family contribution. Typically, there is a dollar for dollar reduction in Brown scholarship aid. For example, if you receive a $500 Federal Pell Grant we will reduce your Brown scholarship by $500.
