"Detecting and Manipulating Single Molecules with STM"
The quest for novel quantum properties of devices has spurred a growing effort in pushing the materials’ size down to nanometer and even molecular scales, or using single molecules as functional components. The recent rapid advances in nanotechnology, especially those based on molecules, are due in large part to our abilities to measure and manipulate individual structures at the molecular scale. With the help of the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), we are able to investigate the intrinsic properties of single molecules and their interactions. We have also carried out experimental attempts to manipulate electronic, magnetic, photonic, and chemical reactivity properties of single molecules, with the purpose of function design for nano- and molecular devices.
