New Faculty Orientation to Teaching at Brown

The Center’s fall orientation for faculty and postdoctoral fellows new to teaching at Brown featured an overview of teaching at Brown by the Dean of the College and the Dean of the Graduate School, a presentation on engaging students with disabilities by the Director of Student & Employee Accessibility Services, panels providing student and faculty perspectives on teaching at Brown, and the opportunity for small-group discussion.  

In conjunction with the orientation, the Center offered the following workshops exclusively for new faculty and postdoctoral fellows:

  • “Teaching for the First Time”  
    This workshop helped new instructors learn how to prepare, plan and implement best teaching practices.
  • “Interactive Classrooms”  
    This workshop introduced strategies that promote active learning in the classroom.

The midyear orientation for faculty and postdoctoral fellows new to teaching at Brown featured an overview of teaching at Brown by Brown faculty  and the opportunity for small-group discussion.  It also included presentations on engaging students with disabilities and students who are non-native English speakers, and on library and technology support for teaching at Brown. 

New TA Orientation to Teaching at Brown

In conjunction with the Graduate School, the Sheridan Center offered an orientation for first-time Teaching Assistants just before the start of the fall semester. Designed to complement departmental TA training, the orientation featured an introduction to TA’ing at Brown by the Dean of the College and the Dean of the Graduate School, a presentation on engaging students with disabilities by the Director of Student & Employee Accessibility Services, hands-on interactive workshops on the topics “Teaching for the First Time,” “Interactive Classrooms” and “Grading Strategies”; and an opportunity for new TAs to discuss their roles and responsibilities with experienced TAs and faculty. 

Participants attended one of the following workshops:

  • “Teaching for the First Time”  
    This workshop helped new instructors learn how to prepare, plan and implement best teaching practices.
  • “Interactive Classrooms”  
    This workshop introduced strategies that promote active learning in the classroom.
  • “Grading Strategies”  
    This workshop introduced  strategies that help new instructors learn to grade effectively and efficiently.
