Brown University Buddies
With Brown's new student and staff "buddy" program, we hope to start creating more opportunities for students and staff members to get to know each other. We want to recognize and reinforce the fact that the Brown “community” is much larger than the academic community by building bonds that help bridge the staff-student divide. You may be paired with someone who shares some of your interests, who may speak your second language (if you are from abroad), or maybe just someone whom you might never have had the chance to meet and talk to otherwise. Your buddy experience can be anything that you want it to be—we ask only that you and your buddy get together at least once or twice over the course of the semester (on Lincoln Field, at the bookstore, etc) in order to become acquainted and to share with one another. We believe that through such familiarity and reflection we can develop an even stronger sense of university unity. Any staff member and any undergraduate or graduate student may apply.
Staff members who would like to apply please fill out this Google DOC. Students who would like to apply, please fill out this Google DOC. Student applications are temporarily closed. Please contact Jake Karr at email@example.com to express your interest in the program and for more information.
Volunteers Needed: Support Girls on the Run!
On Saturday, June 2, Shape Up RI, in partnership with TRIMOM LLC, is sponsoring a 5K run/walk to benefit Girls on the Run - a positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum with running, to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. This event is a celebration of GOTR girls' accomplishments this season, and aims to raise visability, support, funds for national training costs, membership, and licensing fees. The race is open to the public.
The event will be held at Roger Williams Park in Providence, RI, and runs from 8AM - 11AM. Volunteers are needed to set up and staff on-course water station #1, and must arrive no later than 8AM. Please wear pink or green to show your support!

Working to support volunteerism
Over the last few months, SAC has been working closely with Serve Rhode Island to develop a partnership and share our institutional visions for promoting service in Rhode Island. During Staff Development Day in June 2009, a number of staff members expressed an interest in participating in community service and in signing up with Serve Rhode Island as a volunteer.
Volunteer service is a wonderful gift; it can make a critical difference to a non-profit organization working to deliver programs and services under the heavy load of decreased funding and increased need. By giving an hour or two of your time and abilities, you can make a meaningful contribution to your community and to Rhode Island.
If you are interested, please visit their website at www.ServeRhodeIsland.org.
Click HERE to go directly the Serve RHODE ISLAND Volunteer Center, which will take you to a registration page. You will be asked for your name and contact information and, if you choose, you may answer some other questions so that they can get to know you better. When you register, please use your Brown University email address so we can keep track of how many hours Brown employees log over the course of the year.
You will also be given the option to join our Serve Rhode Island Volunteer Corps (Serve Corps). We encourage you to consider joining Serve Corps - this is merely a pledge to volunteer a minimum of two hours per month.
Once you have registered, you will be given your own home page, where you can search for opportunities, save those searches for future reference and log your hours spent volunteering.
Please feel free to be in touch with Serve RI should you
have any questions.
You can call us at 401-331-2298

Thanks again for being a part of
our community of volunteers!
