Visual Art

Description

The Visual Arts concentration engages in artistic practice across a wide range of media: painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, and digital imaging. Courses in art history combine with these to frame the direction of the concentrator's work and to develop his or her critical thinking skills. Students are encouraged to cultivate an informed and thoughtful individual perspective. Students in the Visual Arts department enjoy cutting-edge facilities and a knowledgeable faculty. These two resources inspire creativity and pleasure in our concentrators while they explore the discipline. Students acquire the intellectual and practical tools to make art as well as to interpret and critique the world of images. Students also have the opportunity to take courses at the neighboring Rhode Island School of Design.

• Develop an awareness of the history and theories of visual art
• Acquire the intellectual and practical tools to make art
• Demonstrate critical awareness in analyzing and critiquing images
• Construct and exhibit a body of work

Honors and Capstones

The capstone experience for students graduating in the Visual Art Department is a senior exhibition in one of the three student gallery spaces located in the List Art Building.  Graduating seniors are required to plan, install and promote a body of their recent work.  This experience introduces students to the unique demands of a presenting a body of visual art to an audience.  Students with outstanding academic records who wish to integrate their studies in a one-or two-semester project may apply for the Honors program.  Students must submit applications by April of their junior year. Please visit the Visual Arts website for complete information on the eligibility requirements for Honors.

Brown Visual Arts concentrators often have successful careers in individual studio pursuits but they also have found artistic voices in supporting community action in the arts, curatorial work and art and public policy. They work for companies that include Pixar, the Children's Law Center of Manhattan, the Art Institute of Chicago, DC Comics and the City of Berkelely Housing Department.
