Arrival and Orientation

Orientation introduces students to Brown's open curriculum and the learning experiences it makes possible. It also helps students build community and form lasting friendships. For these reasons, all new students are required to participate in Orientation, which begins Saturday, August 30, 2014.

Brown also offers International Orientation, which all students studying at Brown on an F-1 visa are required to attend, and a few optional pre-orientation programs that help students acclimate to Brown. Click on the links at left for more information about these programs, some of which require advance application.

During Orientation, look for students wearing OWC t-shirts. They belong to the Orientation Welcoming Committee, and they will be happy to guide you and answer your questions.

Brown has committed to sustainability across campus.  The Brown is Green initiative has a welcome page and green move-in tips that will help you to start going green from the moment you arrive.

Brown students, faculty, and staff look forward to greeting and assisting you when you arrive this fall.

Unexpected Travel Needs

If  you have an unexpected need to arrive on campus prior to Saturday due to weather or other factors, please apply for early arrival housing through Residential Life’s online system: reslife.brown.edu/.  You should also email Associate Director of Residential Life Richard_Hilton@Brown.edu with specific information about your situation, including whether or not you will need meal service.  Students approved for early arrival can arrive any time after their approved date.   If the Office of Residential Life is closed, contact the Department of Police & Security (DPS) at 401-863-3322 to gain access to your room for the evening and pick up your keys the following day.

Please don’t just show up!  The online system allows Residential Life to continually update their early arrival roster so that the proper students get safely into the proper residence halls.

Late Arrivals

For instructions on after-hours room admission and picking up your room key, ID, and Orientation packet, see page 7 of the Orientation schedule (below). If you have more specific needs or questions, Brown Public Safety to contact an Administrator on Call on your behalf.
