New Student Survey, Science & Pre-Med study, Packing Green

August 8th, 2014

Dear Brown student, First off, we want to apologize for the fact that you received last Friday's emails only yesterday!  An unexpected transmission glitch delayed delivery of the two messages intended for 8/1/14.  Both are here if you'd like to review them, and the only deadline that has passed is the Visual Arts course lottery. Today's email asks you to participate in a new student survey and highlights our science and premedical studies resources.  We finish with a few tips about what to pack when you come to Brown and a few August 15 deadline reminders.  Questions?  Email us at Advising@brown.edu or call 401/863-9800.  Tell Us About Yourself! In the next week or so, you will receive an email invitation to participate in the Survey of New Students.   This survey will ask about your high school experiences and your expectations for college, and your responses will help us to better serve you and your classmates.   As an added incentive, everyone who completes the survey will have a chance to win a $500 gift certificate to the Brown Bookstore.  Please watch your email for this opportunity to tell us more about yourself.Premedical Studies, Science at BrownAre you considering medical, dental, or veterinary school?  If so (and you are not a PLME student), you should plan on attending the Health Careers Orientation meeting on Monday, September 1, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in List Art Center.  A second information session will be held in October.  Health Careers Advising deans are always available for consultation and advising, as are Health Careers Peer Advisors; for timely information about special events and programs, visit the Health Careers Office website.   The New Scientist Program (NSP) is an excellent mentoring opportunity for any student interested in the sciences.  The program provides advising, mentoring and other support services.  For more information, visit NSP online or email nsp@brown.edu. For a comprehensive overview of Brown's rich and varied resources devoted to science, math, and engineering, check out the Science Center website.Save money, space, and energy by packing green *  Brown gives each student $30 in FREE printing, useable at any library or public computing cluster.  That's 428 double sided sheets, so you might not need your own printer.  Save energy and avoid having to store a personal printer or lug it home.   *  Share with your roommate! Coordinate who brings what appliances for your room.  You can also rent microwaves and mini-fridges from Brown Student Agencies; ask for an Energy Star model that uses less electricity.  Other appliances you might share: hand vacuums, coffee makers, fans, and, if you must, a printer...
