Jan's Experience Abroad
Q: Why did you decide to study abroad?
A: When I was looking at colleges in high school, they all touted their study abroad programs, and I decided pretty quickly that studying abroad was something I wanted to experience during my college years. When the time came, I knew I wanted to go to the UK because I’ve always been obsessed with British history. It just seemed like too great of an opportunity to pass up.
Q: What do you miss most about your time abroad?
A: Honestly, I miss the friends I made in Edinburgh. My flatmates were amazing, and I miss spending evenings with them in our kitchen, talking for hours and watching weird British TV. I also miss the view from my bedroom window, which was mainly of Arthur’s Seat, and ridiculously beautiful. Oh, and digestives with tea.
Q: Highlight from abroad?
A: All the traveling I got to do! Before going abroad, I had only been out of the country once. Over the five months I was in Europe I visited various places in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, and Greece. I also got to take a weeklong trip to London and Paris with my dad, which we had always dreamed about. All of it was fantastic!
Q: What are some of the most important things you learned?
A: I learned that I can rely on myself more than I had ever expected. I learned that I am a braver, more adventurous person than I had previously thought. I also learned how to make really delicious scrambled eggs.
Q: Something you wish you had known before going abroad?
A: I wish I had known how little it would actually rain in Scotland, compared to Providence at least, and that I really didn’t need to take up all that room in my suitcase with rain boots.
