Brown’s “open curriculum” attracts students with the initiative and skill to craft their own vision of an undergraduate education, at an institution where social responsibility is central to the culture. At Brown, students are immersed in a culture of entrepreneurship, continuous exploration and learning, and are expected to chart their own course.
So what results from this mix? Students who are resourceful, creative, passionate, persistent and willing to question accepted ways of doing business. Students whose ambition is not for their own advancement, but rather to make a difference in the world.
Brown offers multiple ways for students to learn about and engage in social innovation. Our Social Innovation Initiative creates a generous culture of idea and resource sharing to guide and support social entrepreneurs and enhance the impact and sustainability of their work in communities.
The Starr Fellowship provides undergraduate students with funding, training, and mentoring to support their efforts to develop and assess new approaches to advancing social change.
The Brown Venture Launch Fund provides seed funding to promising ventures headed by Brown undergraduates to help them test hypotheses, assess markets, and achieve sustainable scale. Grants are available in a progressive series and range from $500 to $4,000. Preference will be given to ventures that address a significant social issue.
