English Language Learners

Rachel Toncelli, the Director of English Language Learning, offers workshops and individual appointments for students whose first language is not English. One-on-one writing appointments are also offered by graduate student writing associates who have special training in working with English language learners.

Academic Conventions in US Writing for Graduate Students

This two-hour workshop discusses the cultural style and reader expectations of academic writing in the United States. Guidelines for organization, argument, thesis statements, paragraph purpose, and effective transitions will be discussed.  Attendees will actively define and use a  "road map" for American writing to improve two essays.

This four session intensive workshop focuses on the cultural expectations and linguistic approaches to effective academic writing in the United States.  Topics discussed will include organization, thesis statements, paragraph purpose, sentence variety, and effective transitions.  Special attention will also be paid to proofreading and editing skills.  Class meets on Friday, September 11, Friday.
