Chinese Empire and Literature

This course offers an introduction to early imperial Chinese literature and to comparative approaches to colonization, sinicization, and cross-cultural heritage. Readings include China’s most famous work of historical literature, Sima Qian’s Shiji; poems, essays, and visual materials from the Qin-Han to Tang periods; and contemporary representations of early empire in Chinese films. Knowledge of classical Chinese welcome but not required.
