Chinese Language Program, Internship and Research Project Support
The Department of East Asian Studies will be awarding a number of grants in support of Chinese language instruction/immersion programs, research projects, and internships in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong, for the summer of 2013. Please browse our annual newsletters for programs attended and projects undertaken by previous award recipients. Examples of digital narrative reflections may also be found on our newsletters webpage.
All registered Brown undergraduate students who are returning to Brown in September 2013 are eligible to apply. Students graduating in May 2013 may not apply. Preference will be given to East Asian Studies concentrators, and to those students with a demonstrated commitment to continued East Asian language study at Brown.
Awards For Concentrators Only
Awards For Both Concentrators and Non-Concentrators
For concentrators in East Asian Studies
The Department seeks to encourage concentrators to pursue intensive language training, research, and other opportunities for learning related to China, and offers the following support for those activities:
- East Asian Studies concentrators writing an honors thesis using Chinese language sources may apply for awards of up to $2500 to support their research. These funds may be used for travel to archives or other sites associated with the research project. Students will normally apply for support in the second semester of their junior year, and begin work on the project in the summer between junior and senior year.
For both concentrators in East Asian Studies and non-concentrators
- Undergraduates planning to attend summer language programs in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong, may apply to the Department for awards of up to $5,000. Funds can be applied to tuition, travel, or living costs for those programs.
- The Department will also provide up to $2,500 in support of students pursuing eight- to ten-week unpaid or minimally paid summer internships in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong. Students wishing to take unpaid or poorly paid positions with NGOs, companies, or government agencies, may apply these awards toward travel, lodging, or living costs.
- Concentrators and non-concentrators may apply for support from The Arun Stewart '11 Memorial Fund, established by Sunita and Tony Stewart in memory of their son, the late Arun David Stewart, Class of 2011, to honor his passion for Chinese language and culture. The fund supports undergraduates who conduct independent research projects in China, or participate in low-paid or unpaid internships in China, or pursue intensive language studies in China. Distributions from the Fund will be exclusively used to support summer travel to China (including related living expenses) by undergraduate students. The purposes of the Fund, in order of the Donors' preferences, will be to support recipients who: 1) conduct independent research projects in China; or 2) participate in low-paid or unpaid internships in China; or 3) pursue intensive language instruction in China. With respect to distributions from the Fund that are made for the purpose of pursuing intensive language instruction in China, the Donors prefer that recipients be enrolled in the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies.
