Faculty Searches for the Brown School of Engineering
Brown University established a School of Engineering on July 1, 2010 and is engaged in an aggressive multi-year growth plan. Brown is actively recruiting faculty members in the following areas.
- Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering (environmental science/technology)
- Computer Engineering (computer architecture, VLSI, embedded systems, low-power systems)
- Solid Mechanics (micro/nano-scale solid mechanics, mechanics of cells and biological systems, soft matter mechanics, mechanics of materials for energy applications, computational mechanics, experimental mechanics, multiscale modeling)
- Entrepreneurship (undergraduate and master’s level teaching in entrepreneurship and technology management, research in any of the above engineering fields, and a commitment to entrepreneurship curriculum development)
Positions are open at all levels. Searches are being conducted for highly qualified faculty members in each of the following areas.
Women and candidates who are members of minority groups are especially encouraged to apply. Brown University is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action employer.
- Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering (Robert_Hurt@brown.edu)
Topics of interest in this area include: environmental science, environmental technology, or environmental health. The candidate would be expected to interact strongly with Brown's existing Superfund Research Program, which involves projects that span the range from toxicology to characterization and cleanup of contaminated sites. The selection will emphasize the candidate’s potential for scientific research at a high level of scholarship.
- Computer Engineering (Iris_Bahar@brown.edu)
Topics of interest in this area include, but are not limited to: computer architecture (including special purpose architectures); VLSI systems and CAD; embedded systems; sensors and interfaces; computer networks; and interactions between computing, nanotechnology and molecular electronics (including non-silicon computing). Brown has a strong program in entrepreneurship, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels and we encourage candidates with entrepreneurial background within the scope of computer engineering also to apply. Special emphasis will be placed on the potential for the candidate to foster, nurture, and expand our existing strengths and/or who will build new strengths that are synergistic to our current ones in the overall area of computer engineering.
- Solid Mechanics (Kyung-Suk_Kim@brown.edu)
Topics of interest in this area include, but are not limited to: micro/nano-scale solid mechanics, mechanics of cells and biological systems, soft matter mechanics, mechanics of materials for energy applications, computational mechanics, experimental mechanics, micro-electro-mechanical systems and nano-structures, and multiscale modeling. Candidates should have expertise in the mechanics of structural, electronic, biological, and./or energy systems that are complementary to and synergystic with existing research areas in the School. The successful candidate is expected to make a significant contribution to the School's research activities and to build a strong, externally funded research program.
- Entrepreneurship (Angus_Kingon@brown.edu)
Brown University seeks a distinguished scholar in entrepreneurship to join the faculty participating in Brown's Program in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship (PRIME), based in the School of Engineering, and in the University-wide program in Commerce, Organizations and Entrepreneurship (COE). This scholar will assume an appointment in the School of Engineering, as a member of the growing body of scholars at Brown engaged in research and teaching in fields related to entrepreneurship and technology and innovation management. We are seeking a forward-looking academic who will participate in the further development of the COE and PRIME programs at Brown. The successful applicant is likely to have a Ph.D. in entrepreneurship, or a related field such as technology management, but with additional credentials that will establish a scholarly connection to colleagues in the School of Engineering. Examples include (in addition to the Ph.D.): an MS degree in a science or engineering field; a BS and work experience in technology companies. Alternatively, the successful candidate may have a Ph.D. in a science or engineering discipline, but with additional credentials such as an MBA, and/or a record of scholarly activities in entrepreneurship and technology management.
Positions are open at all levels. All candidates should submit a curriculum vitae with a cover letter. The letter should discuss research plans, laboratory requirements, and teaching interests. Expectations for the various levels of appointment, and instructions for additional materials to be submitted are:
- Assistant Professor, tenure-track
- Candidates should hold a Ph.D. and demonstrate potential for outstanding research and teaching. Candidates should arrange for at least 3 letters of reference to be submitted to the address below.
- Associate Professor, tenured or untenured
- Candidates should have an outstanding record of research accomplishment and scholarly achievement, with concomitant strong evidence of emerging leadership in their field. Candidates should provide the names of 5 references whom the search committee may contact directly.
- Professor, with tenure
- Candidates should have an outstanding record of research accomplishment and scholarly achievement, with concomitant strong evidence of realized leadership in their field. Candidates should provide the names of 5 references whom the search committee may contact directly.
All application materials should be submitted to:
