NASA Selects Instruments to Track Climate Impact on Vegetation

The project is being lead by Ralph Dubayah at UMD,  but importantly for us, Jim Kellner is one of (only) 7 PIs, so he is who we highlight. The project, called the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation, will put a LiDAR sensor on the International Space Station to completely map the world's forest structure. Currently there is no such sensor in orbit, and we lack this basic information about the planet's forests, which is contributing to the uncertainty that exists over the role of (for example) tropical forests in the global carbon cycle.

Dave Ciplet wins Dendtler Award for Outstanding Student Achievement in Public Sociology

I am pleased to announce that Dave Ciplet won the Robert Dentler Award for Outstanding Student Achievement from the American Sociological Association Section on Sociological Practice and Public Sociology.   Dave has made truly remarkable contributions to the field of public sociology and the sociology of practice, making an impact that I think would be the pride of most active full professors.

Meredith Hastings to receive the AGU Ascent Award

Professor Meredith Hastings has been chosen to receive the 2014 Ascent Award from the American Geophysical Union. This prestigious prize, commensurate with her many scientific achievements, aims to reward exceptional mid-career scientists in the fields of the atmospheric and climate sciences.
