Search for a Book

The books of the John Carter Brown Library are included in the Brown University online catalog, JOSIAH.

JOSIAH includes records for the entire Brown University Library system; you may restrict your search to items in the John Carter Brown Library  by selecting “John Carter Brown Library” from the pull-down menu at “Limit search to."

What is NOT in JOSIAH?

  • The print collection
  • The manuscript/codices collections
  • The archive collection

These materials, and a small portion of the printed book collection (about 10 to 15%), are accessible only through the library’s onsite card catalogues and print resources. Our larger manuscript collections, such as the Brown Family business records (ca. 1735- 1914) and the John Russell Bartlett papers (ca. 1832-1886) can be researched through printed finding aids, or increasingly, through the Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections Online database (RIAMCO).

The Library staff is available to help locate material and to answer questions about the collections.  Please direct general questions to the Reference Librarian or to subject area curators.

Increasingly, much of our rare and important historical resources are available in digital form.  Please visit Digital Book Collections for more information about online material.
