How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?
Brown has provided me clinical knowledge needed to handle anything that comes through the door. Brown's emphasis on graded responsibility has created an ideal environment for me to mature into the attending physician I hoped to become.

When I come out of this program, I'll be truly ready to manage everything involved in leading a busy emergency department. The program has trained me not only the provision of excellent, evidence-based patient care, but also heavily developed my skills in conflict resolution, negotiation, team leadership, and systems management. This is a unique benefit of the 4-year program here, perhaps compared to a 3-year program elsewhere. As an EMS fellow next year, I know I'll be able to take on whatever challenges come my way.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?
The residency program at Brown has been a fantastic place to develop my skills and clinical practice as a physician. I'm convinced the clinical experience here is unparalleled - we work at many different levels throughout residency with many different patient populations. The experience of working a critical care shift surpasses any other - I have taken care of the sickest of the sick in an environment that allowed flexibility without short-changing oversight and teaching by attendings. I have worked with myriad physicians with different practice styles to emulate and experiment with, developing my own style in the process. As a PGY4, I get the great pleasure of teaching new interns and running 16 beds of the ED as if it were my department. It's a challenging role - but crucial in preparing for a career! Finishing at Brown at the end of the year, I know I'm prepared for the worst the world can throw at an ED door.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?

I'm in my fourth year of residency and I'm not going to see it all. Not even close. But if any program WAS going to come close, or if any program was going to prepare me to handle the challenge of things I haven't seen, this was the one. It's brilliantly designed, gradually introducing more responsibility and more autonomy as the years progress. I found myself quickly progressing from being an intern testing out my differential on "bread and butter" emergency medicine cases, to building speed and efficiency my second year, to taking care of the highest acuity medical and trauma patients my third year, to now teaching the interns and managing flow in the department. Most importantly, four years in this residency program has turned me into the doctor I always wanted to be. The kind of doctor that has a strong foundation of knowledge, an arsenal of skills to truly help my patients, the ability to sensitively communicate with patients, and finally, has given me innumerable opportunities to develop my educational skills (teaching is one of my true passions). I will not see it all in residency. But I feel as prepared as I could possibly be -- and I think that's what counts.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?

Strong critical care and trauma experience in our second and third years, teaching, leadership and emphasis on department flow during our fourth year. Specialized training like during Plastic Surgery rotation to improve the quality of our laceration repairs and a great balance between adult and pediatric shifts so we are comfortable with pediatrics. The opportunity to do electives in other parts of the country or the world to seek alternate experiences and explore places we may be interested in for the future.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?

This program truly does prepare you to handle "anything that walks through the door". Having the third year dedicated to critical care was by far the highlight of residency. I now understand why graduates of the program would tell me they would do their third year over again if given the chance.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?

Training at Brown has been exceptional. I've gotten outstanding clinical experience in a high volume, high acuity ED that serves as both a tertiary care center and the county hospital for Providence. I've been fortunate to enjoy support from dynamic co-residents, a broad, diverse faculty group, and a responsive residency and departmental leadership. The four years here have afforded me the chance to explore areas of academic interest and to deepen my clinical skills; I feel incredibly fortunate to have trained in a program with the resources and commitment to help me achieve my goals. The limits of what you can achieve here, or where you'll go next, are set by the individual, not the program or the department – I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity than to be an EM resident at Brown.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?

The Brown Emergency Medicine Residency has been an amazing experience. Clinically, the patient volume and diversity of pathology has been even more than I expected. The experience of being the resident running the critical care rooms was especially valuable and has made me feel prepared for taking care of sick patients next year.
Outside of the clinical arena, the opportunity for faculty mentorship and research at Brown have allowed me to explore my interest in women's health within emergency medicine. These experiences have helped me form the beginning of my career in emergency medicine and have led to a fellowship opportunity in emergency medicine. Doing a Women's Health in Emergency Care Fellowship after I graduate from residency will give me a chance to further develop the interests I've carved out in residency and will help me reach the next set of my career goals.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?
They have given me a strong foundation of medical knowledge upon which to build my practice style upon. They have taught me how to effectively manage multiple critically ill patients at once, teach residents, manage patient flow, and run a department. In short, they have prepared me to become an attending. They have also given me camaraderie among my fellow residents, and have given me friends for life.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?
During residency at Brown I managed a diverse array of clinical pathology and gained skills and confidence managing critically ill patients. The graduated nature of the program, from wards and ICU management, to increasing critical care responsibilities, to mentoring and teaching as a senior resident has progressively enhanced my skill set. Particular strengths of the program that I have benefitted from include training in ultrasound, toxicology, radiology, and EKG interpretation. As I move forward from my training to become an independent practitioner, I feel well prepared to meet the challenges ahead.

How has Brown prepared you for what is next in your career?
Coming into residency I was attracted to Brown because of the strong academic feeling of this program with exposure to diverse patient populations from all backgrounds and socioeconomic classes and wide variety of pathology. After four years in this program Brown has exceed my expectations. Our Attendings truly emphasize education regardless of the situation and nothing compares to the skills learned while taking care of twelve critical care patients at one time (during our critical care third year). Pursuit of special interests within our department is strongly encouraged. Numerous attending have proved invaluable resources in toxicology, EMS, ultrasound, cardiac, and critical care just to name a few. Resident involvement in special interests is whole-heartedly supported and has allowed me to pursue a career in Sports Medicine within Emergency Medicine. Most importantly I have been fortunate enough to be part of this program that not only prepared me for anything that may be thrown my way, but also strongly values the importance of family and encourages wellness just as it does academics. I have been able to continue playing soccer, and enjoy kayaking and hiking with my husband and dog Tommy. It is this balance that keeps everyone in our residency sincerely happy.
