Beyond clinical work, what things have you become involved in?
Much of my free time is spent planning (and/or executing) my next adventure. Whether it's training for a marathon, road trips to Vermont, or figuring out how to travel the world on a resident's salary, I crave balance between my hospital and personal lives. Brown has been an excellent match for me on this front. We are given the freedom to cultivate our own interests while having built in structure that ensures our clinical and academic training is first-rate. The personalities that this program attracts, both residents and attending, add to the richness of our community.

Beyond clinical work, what things have you become involved in?
As a PGY-1, I was fortunate to become very involved very early. Now in my PGY-2 year, I continue in the roles that I started last year. I serve as a resident representative to the Rhode Island Medical Society (RIMS), where I attend council meetings and occasionally visit the State House. This year, I'm hoping to get more residents - from all programs - involved with advocacy efforts.
In addition, with tremendous support from the entire Brown EM program, I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA) in September of last year. My role is as the representative to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). I am currently in the middle of my two-year term, so I'm looking forward to the second and final year in this role. Part of the position involves attending ACEP Board meetings, where I provide the residents' perspectives on issues. I also attend EMRA Board meetings, where I report back on topics of interest for residents. I get to develop projects, write articles, and speak for EM residents - we are the exciting future of the best specialty in medicine!

Beyond clinical work, what things have you become involved in?
Since moving back to Providence for residency, I've been able to indulge myself in the activities that I missed while living in the concrete metropolis of New York City. So far, I've managed to run my first 50K ultramarathon, spend time fine-tuning my new carbon-fiber road bike, plan a few snowboarding trips, and learn to plant fall bulbs in my garden. I've fueled my growing interest in Sports Medicine by volunteering for the New York City Marathon, the Boston Marathon, and local high-school pre-participation sports physical exams. I'm a proud member of the Wellness Committee and a mentor for the residency buddy program. Over the next few years, I'm hoping to help expand the orthopedic radiology curriculum, publish a paper or two, become involved with teaching the medical students at Brown, and perhaps complete my first triathlon to boot.

I am an active member of the RIH Physicians' Health Committee. The Physicians' Health Committee is a peer review group that helps physicians address personal problems that can compromise professional performance. We commonly help physicians identify and resolve problems related to substance abuse, psychiatric illness, and/or medical illness. Physicians are engaged in a long-term contract with the committee, and we will actively advocate before licensing boards, hospital staff, and HMO's for physicians successful in addressing personal problems.

Beyond clinical work, what things have you become involved in?
During my first year at Brown I have been involved in the Residency Advisory Committee, helping residency leadership and faculty change and adapt our curriculum to improve the educational value to all residents. This has been an invaluable experience as it has given me the chance to become more intimately involved in the residency, understanding the process behind making such a wonderful program function well. I was also active in providing tours for applicants on interview days. Finally I was involved with the Brown EMS training program guiding EMT-B students around the ER on observation shifts helping them become familiar with how our ED functions.

Beyond clinical work, what things have you become involved in?
Although intern year was very busy I still feel that there was ample opportunity to become involved in activities outside of our clinical duties. One activity that I was consistently involved in was volunteering at the Rhode Island Free Clinic. This was an extremely rewarding and rejuvenating experience that allowed me to care for the medically underserved of Providence in the primary care setting, despite the fact that my primary care brain is quickly atrophying! In addition, I have been trying to further direct my career towards a critical care medicine fellowship by joining EMRA's Critical Care Committee and becoming involved in clinical research with our devoted faculty. Another great opportunity that I was able to take advantage of last year was volunteering for the RI Medical Reserve Corps, which is an organization that provides medical care for large events within Rhode Island, such as the Newport Folk and Jazz Festival. Becoming involved in medical student education was yet another option during intern year. Both the Wilderness Medicine Medical Student elective and the On Doctoring course through the medical school offered opportunities to refine my skills as an educator. Our residency offers a multitude of outlets to further develop your career as an emergency medicine physician. The limiting factor is more of your imagination and perseverance than the possibilities that the Brown EM residency has to offer.
