Facilities
Rhode Island Hospital
During residency at Alpert Medical School you will rotate at four outstanding and complimentary hospitals. The program is based at Rhode Island Hospital, a busy full service urban academic medical center and the only Level I Trauma and Burn Center in Rhode Island. The Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Center, built in 2005, has a volume of well over 100,000 patients per year, making it one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the Northeast and the country. Our state-of-the-art facility features seventy- two urgent rooms, twelve critical care bays, two dedicated CT scanners, a chest pain observation unit, and an emergency cardiac catheterization lab. Here you will have immediate access to all the tools necessary to take care of Southeastern New England’s sickest and most severely injured patients.
The Miriam Hospital
At the Miriam Hospital, our community hospital located 2.5 miles away from Rhode Island Hospital, you will start to work more independently with more medically complex patients. The patients at the Miriam hospital have better access to primary care and often present to the Emergency Department in a more decompensated state. We spend a dedicated month here in 1st and 2nd year and then sporadically throughout 3rd and 4th year. You will undoubtedly love your time at the Miriam and learn volumes from the expertly experienced faculty that attend there.
Hasbro Children's Hospital
Hasbro Children’s Hospital, which is the dedicated children’s hospital of Rhode Island Hospital and physically attached, is where you will acquire important skills in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Hasbro is a busy urban referral center and Level I Pediatric Trauma Center seeing well over 50,000 patients each year. We spend a dedicated month here in 1st year and then sporadically as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years. Here you will work side-by-side dedicated, enthusiastic, and incredibly knowledgeable Pediatric Emergency Medicine attending. There is no shortage of pediatric training and you will leave our program feeling comfortable taking care of sick children.
Women and Infants Hospital
Women and Infants Hospital is a world-renowned specialty hospital immediately adjacent to Rhode Island Hospital that cares for all aspects of the obstetric and gynecologic patient. We rotate here for a month as 1st years in the Triage unit, which serves as an intake for patients with obstetric and gynecologic emergencies, and on the Labor and Delivery unit, where you are guaranteed to have more than enough deliveries.
Rhode Island Hospital Simulation Center
The EM has a high fidelity simulation center designed and operated by the Emergency Medicine faculty. The center features one pediatric, one obstetric and three adult state of the art mannequins. Every month residents spend an entire conference dedicated to simulations and procedure learning. In addition, residents engage in specialized courses tailored to their respective years of residency and are required to design and implement a simulation during the 4th year of residency.
